I am a school adjustment counselor with the Springfield Public School System. This is my second school year as a school adjustment counselor at an elementary school.
What was your major/degree(s) at Springfield College?
I successfully earned a master of social work degree in 2012 with an area of emphasis in school social work.
Reflecting on your education at Springfield College, what would you cite as the most impactful experience?
As a graduate student in the School of Social Work advanced standing program, successfully completing my courses increased my learning and enhanced my interpersonal skills. My dedicated professors provided me with a wealth of knowledge in all areas of social work as well integrated the essential components from the social work code of ethics. I gained a rich perspective on my education, my career, and my life with the School of Social Work. The academic focus of the required courses, educational design, and fieldwork internships provided me with a distinct advantage. It enabled me to excel academically and foster new growth in the development of my professional self.
How did the career center assist in your transition from being a student to a professional in the workplace?
The assistance provided at the Springfield College Career Center has been outstanding and the knowledge I have obtained has been exceptional. The career center provided me with a wealth of resources that were fundamental in supporting me with numerous steps in my job search process and professional development. The career counselors offered great pointers, guidance, and advice. My dedicated career counselor helped me develop a strong curriculum vitae and cover letter, which after many drafts was perfected. The career center not only addressed my career needs, professionalism, but also nurtured and motivated my spirit. I am convinced that the essential skills I gained contributed to my success in the social work profession as a school adjustment counselor.
What advice would you give to recent alumni or current students who aspire to follow a similar career path?
Some helpful advice that I would share is the key to success is maximizing your resources. I would encourage alumni and current students to actively engage in career exploration through research, attending networking events, and attending job fairs. A visit to the career center would be beneficial to work on your resume, cover letter, and business cards. The career counselors demonstrate a deep understanding of the current practices in career development. They are well-versed, innovative, and best of all, provide enthusiastic support for students career ambitions.
What would you say to a student who is considering a career in social work?
For a student who is considering a career in social work I would recommend reaching out to professionals in their desired career choice to encourage a mentoring relationship. Connecting with your academic advisor and field placement supervisor would be additional support and resources that will benefit your career exploration.
Define your career path and future aspirations.
I am passionate about my career as a school adjustment counselor where I am able to provide students with the benefits of a quality, comprehensive, developmental school counseling program that is indicative to academic success and elevates a high self-esteem. I am confident in my ability to cultivate a positive learning environment where students will have the ability to see their growth and become empowered to realize their full potential. I am looking forward to embracing a culture of educational excellence with the Springfield Public School System now and for the years ahead!
