SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Springfield College Associate Professor of Rehabilitation and Disability Studies Michael Accordino and health science student Ashley Lynch jointly had their abstract entitled, The War on Vaccinations: Constitutional Right versus Public Peril, accepted for a poster presentation at the World Biotechnology Congress (WBC) 2013 to be held in Boston in June.
Lynch and Accordino’s abstract focuses on vaccinations, and the purpose of the poster is to inform decision makers of issues such as governments risking epidemics to respect the choice of patients, mandatory vaccinations being a part of the war on terrorism, and what should be the determining factor of who gets vaccinated and who does not—individual citizens or the government?
“This is an impressive accomplishment for Springfield College and Ashley because undergraduates typically don’t have presentations accepted at world conferences,” said Accordino. “Ashley has been a remarkable student and her knowledge and passion for her research will be on display when she attends the World Biotechnology Congress.”
The WBC 2013, which will take place June 3-6, attracts leading scientists from all over the world, including a number of Nobel Laureates, to present the recent advances in biotechnology. Presenters are featured during a poster reception in which they are available to discuss their research with their peers.
“It’s truly an honor to have the chance to take part in a world conference at the age of 22,” said Lynch. “I started to gain interest in research in the Springfield College health science curriculum and realized how vital it is to stay updated with the literature in our field in order to be the very best health practitioner. Springfield College offers so many opportunities to become a leader and I am so thankful I chose to come here and make the best out of my four years.”
