Cause-Driven Leader Springfield College
YMCA Professional Studies student
The Value of Giving Back I’m John Rice.
The YMCA was a place of learning and growth during my childhood, and it taught me the value of giving back. Three years ago, I realized that the same organization that helped create my value system also provides career opportunities. That’s when I discovered Springfield College.
As a youth development major and YMCA professional studies minor, I have the privilege of being involved in conferences, networking, workshops, leadership development, and classes specific to my interest. The program has opened doors for me and equipped me with the tools to successfully walk through them.
In the YMCA Club, I was able to use my voice in leading campus efforts to raise money, and exceed our goal, for Japan Relief in 2011 by selling paper cranes.
Springfield College Assistant Director of YMCA Relations Erin Friedman has always been the person I can go to for support, direction, and encouragement. Erin has helped me discover my true potential and leadership abilities, and has helped open my eyes to the impact I can make.
What I have received at Springfield College—the superior education, the learning opportunities both academic and experiential, and the support of faculty and staff—have led to my development as a cause-driven leader. I hope to provide those same opportunities for education, growth, and service to others in my own YMCA career.
