The Springfield College School of Social Work hosted the conference, "Trauma and Attachment: Understanding and Repairing," on June 1, at the Brennan Center.
The speakers were Megan "Peg" Kirby, Psy.D., and Ken Frohock, LMHC, LRC, of the Attachment Institute of New England. The conference explored the manifestations of trauma and attachment dysregulation, new understandings of neuroplasticity, and ways to help a child and family heal. There have been recent changes in the understanding of trauma and attachment issues, and their effects on a child's neurobiology.
Kirby holds a doctorate from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology. A licensed clinical psychologist, she has been a Peace Corps volunteer, a teacher, and a supervisor in both public and private agencies. She has specialized in the treatment of attachment disorders since 1995 and is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Level II Certified. She is the adoptive mom of four children.
Frohock has a master's degree and a certificate of advanced graduate study in counseling. He brings extensive clinical experience from the fields of domestic violence and addictions to the team and is EMDR Level II Certified. He is a regional manager of the Adoption Journeys Program, which offers support to adoptive families at risk for disruption, and has been a counselor since 1988. He is the adoptive legal dad of three children.
The conference was sponsored by Springfield College School of Social Work, Massachusetts Department of Children and Families, Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange, and the Adoptive Families Together Program of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
