SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Springfield College hosted the 29th annual Sport Literature Association (SLA) Conference from June 27-30.
The four-day event attracted a wide range of writers, poets and professors from colleges and universities throughout North America and Europe. The featured attendee at this year’s conference was Michael Weinreb, who was the keynote speaker at the event’s annual dinner on June 28 at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Weinreb gained national attention with a series of articles regarding the rise and fall of his hometown Penn State football program. Weinreb is also author of the critically acclaimed book “Bigger Than The Game,” focused on the creation of the modern-day athlete in the 1980’s.
Individuals attending the conference took part in multiple panel discussions and lectures. Sessions included academic research presentations focused on sport in literature, drama, film, and journalism. Participants also read from creative works of sport-related fiction and poetry.
Springfield College Associate Professor of Communications Dennis Gildea serves as the president of SLA. Joining Gildea as presenters were Springfield College faculty members Kyle Belanger, instructor of communications; Derek W. Paar, professor in the psychology department; Marty Dobrow, associate professor of communications; and Martha Barry-Plotkin, adjunct professor in the humanities department. Dean of the School of Arts, Sciences, and Professional Studies Anne Herzog led the conference’s opening remarks and ceremony.
The SLA is an international organization devoted to the study of sport in literature and culture with membership numbering several hundred scholars, students, and readers from around the world. Founded in 1983, the stated purpose of the organization is to encourage, stimulate, and foster the alliance of sport with the humanities.
