SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Charles J. Smith, long-time teacher-coach and international ambassador, was honored for his years of service to Springfield College with the naming of the Charles J. Smith Lounge, located at the Doggett International Center in the Richard B. Flynn Campus Union.
Smith served as the director of the International Academy at Springfield College, later renamed to the International English Language Institute at the College, from 1986-1999. Smith was instrumental in strengthening international relationships between the College and countries in Asia, including China, Japan, and Taiwan. Following his retirement in 1999, Smith continued to build international partnerships between the College and students in the Far East by accompanying current Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn on multiple trips outside the United States.
“Charlie’s impact on Springfield College’s international program is immeasurable,” said Flynn. “He was an influential ambassador to many countries in the Far East, China in particular. Charlie opened doors that have led to important and productive partnerships with many individuals and institutions. These partnerships have been beneficial to Springfield College and will be for years to come.”
Not only did Smith have an impact on international relations with the College, but he also served as a Springfield College swimming coach for 23 years from 1966 through 1989. During his long-standing tenure with the swimming program, he instructed both the men’s and women’s teams on different occasions, as well as serving as diving coach for a period of time starting in 1967. From 1986-1989, Smith performed double duty leading the swimming programs and also directing the International Academy.
“It’s truly an honor to be recognized by the College because I strongly believe the international work is so important,” said Smith. “I am very proud of what we have been able to accomplish and the impact we were able to have on so many students. Springfield College has grown so much and will continue to grow internationally.”
The mission of the International Center at Springfield College is to foster the international character of the institution by promoting, supporting, and developing a wide range of international and intercultural opportunities for all members of the Springfield College Community.
