Mission and Objectives of the
Graduate Programs

Rehabilitation counseling and services programs prepare specialists who have a vital role in the vocational, educational, and personal adjustment of persons who have a physical, mental, or emotional impairment or disabilities. Frequently, the rehabilitation counselor is part of a team of physicians, psychologists, social workers, and other professionals who evaluate the problems of individuals and assist them to achieve maximum self-realization and independence. Employment is readily available for well-trained professionals in state vocational rehabilitation programs, private rehabilitation services and agencies, public and private hospitals, institutions, and clinics. Rehabilitation counseling programs are provided in cooperation with the Rehabilitation Services Administration and United States Department of Education and are nationally accredited by the Commission on Rehabilitation Education.

The major learning objectives, which are primary to the program mission, are:
  • 1. To educate individuals in rehabilitation counseling and evaluation skills; in rehabilitation theory and methodology; and in independent living, the world of work, occupations and job demands, medical and psychological conditions, case management and community resources, hospitals, schools, agencies and federal-state-private programs.
  • 2. To develop mature, competent professionals who can relate constructively to clients, understand normal and deviant behavior and bring critical faculties and wisdom to bear in their rehabilitation counseling and services activities.
  • 3. To prepare students to become nationally Certified Rehabilitation Counselors (CRC) and/or licensed rehabilitation counselors.
