7th Annual Block Party and Barbecue on the Hill This Wednesday
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Aug. 17, 2010 – Residents of the Old Hill and Upper Hill communities will celebrate a year of progress at an old-fashioned neighborhood block party and barbecue, on Wednesday, Aug. 18, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Springfield College Rugby Field, at the corner of Alden Street and Eastern Avenue. Community leaders will address the crowd.Along with the live music of Billy Arnold & Friends, the block party will feature a resource fair with information about housing, health, education and community services. The Upper Hill and Old Hill neighborhood councils will encourage neighbors to participate in Neighborhood Watch and become active in the councils. For children, there will be a bounce house.
Hosting the event will be the Old Hill and Upper Hill neighborhood councils, Springfield College, and the Partnership for the Renewal of Old Hill (PROHill), which includes the City of Springfield, HAP, Inc., Springfield Neighborhood Housing Services (SNHS) and Greater Springfield Habitat for Humanity in addition to Springfield College, the Old Hill Neighborhood Council and other community partners.
Presenting sponsors will be Baystate Health, MassMutual Financial Group and TDBankNorth. Additional supporters, who will also be exhibitors, are Springfield Partners for Community Action, Holyoke/Chicopee Head Start, the Springfield Chapter of Rebuilding Together, Kool Smiles and Milone and McBroom. Western Massachusetts Electric Company is also a supporter.
Also exhibiting will be Springfield Neighborhood Housing Services, Habitat for Humanity, the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department, Mason Square Health Task Force, Mason Square Weed and Seed Community Coalition, Square One, William N. DeBerry School and Dunbar Community Center.
Springfield College will announce that its 13th annual Humanics in Action Day will be on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010. Once again, the college will suspend usual activity for a day of concentrated community service by its students, faculty and staff. The college will also pledge to continue its additional thousands of hours of annual community service. Its students, faculty and staff tutor and mentor in local schools, serve as counselors and case managers for local families, conduct youth leadership programs and sports clinics, perform internships and field work at community agencies and more.
