Springfield College Names Redmond as Dean, School of Health, Physical Education, Recreation
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 14, 2008 – Springfield College has named Charles J. Redmond of Springfield, Mass., an internationally renowned athletic training educator, as dean of the Springfield College School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, effective June 1, 2008.Redmond was selected for the position following the college’s national search for a successor to William J. Considine of Wilbraham, Mass., who retired as dean in December 2007 and will continue at the college as a professor of physical education. Redmond has been interim dean since Jan. 1.
A member of the Hall of Fame of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), and the recipient of NATA’s Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award, Redmond has been a member of the Springfield College faculty since 1969. He is a contributing author to several textbooks widely used in higher education in athletic training, and has promoted athletic training and athletic health care in several Asian nations, Ireland, Aruba, and around the United States.
In announcing the appointment, Jean A. Wyld, Springfield College vice president for academic affairs said, “We are fortunate that Professor Redmond, with his experience in the disciplines of this school, impressive accomplishments in his specialty, and demonstrated effective leadership of his department and this school, has agreed to serve as dean. He is uniquely qualified to lead the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation in educating students for careers in these ever-advancing fields.”
Redmond has been chair of the Springfield College Exercise Science and Sport Studies Department for 15 years, and a member of the athletic training staff since 1969. Since 1996, he also has been director of the Fok Physical Education and Sport Exchange Programs, Springfield College’s physical educator exchange program with Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, People’s Republic of China; and coordinator of YMCAs of Hong Kong/Springfield College Sport Science Workshop.
In his new position, Redmond will administer the school with 1,000 students in bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs, and 60 full-time faculty members, including teacher-coaches in the college’s athletics program, which competes in Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The school comprises the Exercise Science and Sport Studies Department, Physical Education and Health Education Department, and Sport Management and Recreation Department.
A certified and licensed athletic trainer and licensed physical therapist, Redmond is a member of the board of directors of the NATA Research and Education Foundation, and a former member of NATA’s board of directors.
He also is a former preseason assistant athletic trainer for the New England Patriots and head sport therapist for the Saudi Arabian Olympic and Olympic Development program. Since 1992, he has coordinated athletic health care for the Massachusetts Senior Games.
Redmond earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education and health, and his master’s degree in physical education administration at Springfield College. He also earned a master’s degree in physical therapy at Boston University.
