Ira Colby, Social Work Education Council National President at Springfield College to Discuss Post-Katrina Social Work
Springfield, Mass., March 28, 2008 – Ira Colby, D.S.W., president of the Council on Social Work Education and dean of the Graduate College of Social Work at the University of Houston, will discuss the role of social workers in post-Hurricane Katrina service on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, from 9 to 10:15 a.m., at the Springfield College School of Social Work, 45 Island Pond Road, Springfield.
In the presentation, which is open to social work professionals and students and the public, Colby will draw upon the experiences of students and faculty members at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work who served in the post-hurricane relief.
Colby, a 1971 graduate of Springfield College, is an expert in social policy and macro social work practice political social work. He earned his master’s degree in social work at Virginia Commonwealth University, and his doctoral degree in social work at the University of Pennsylvania.
Springfield College offers the only master of social work weekend program in New England. Students can complete the weekend program in three years, or the weekday program in two years with classes twice per week. The combined master of social work/juris doctorate is a four-year program in conjunction with Western New England College School of Law. Springfield College also offers an advanced standing master of social work program for qualified graduates of bachelor of social work programs that are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
During his two-day visit to Springfield College, Colby, who played lacrosse as a student there, will present Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach Keith Bugbee with a selection of his lacrosse memorabilia, and will tour the campus. He also will discuss the role of the University of Houston Graduate School of Social Work Advisory Board with members of the Springfield College School of Social Work Advisory Board, and will meet with the school’s dean and faculty.
