Daggett to Discuss Athletics as Foundation for Other Success

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 17, 2008 – Tim Daggett, Olympic gold medalist, national television gymnastics commentator, and entrepreneur will deliver The Weckwerth Lecture, Springfield College’s premiere scholarly event in the field of sports management and recreation, on Wednesday, April 2, at 5:30 p.m., in the Townhouse Conference Room on the campus.

Daggett will speak to students and others in the field of sport management and recreation on “Transferring Athletic Skills in Leadership and Entrepreneurship.” The program will be open to the public free of charge.

Daggett, who scored a perfect 10 on the high bar at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, shattered the bones of his leg at the 1987 World Championships. He went on to become the expert color commentator on gymnastics events worldwide for NBC-TV, and to establish a multimillion-dollar training facility for gymnastics, martial arts, cheerleading and dance. He also is a book author and motivational speaker.

The Weckwerth Lecture annually brings leading experts in the fields of sport management and recreation to Springfield College to address emerging trends in these fields. The College offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in sport management and recreation, fields in which career opportunities are fast expanding as Americans have increasingly more time and options for leisure.

The lecture is named in honor of the late Charles F. Weckwerth, who was a distinguished Springfield College professor of humanics.

NBC TELEVISION PERSONALLITY

For the past 18 years, Tim Daggett has been the expert color commentator for NBC during all gymnastics events. He has traveled the world bringing gymnastics to millions of people. His tenure includes: the 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, and upcoming 2008 Olympic Games in China, as well as all major national and international events held in the USA. This highly unique and coveted position enables Tim the opportunity to share contemporary insights on the ever-changing world of Olympic sport. Tim was also a sideline reporter for ski jumping at the 2006 Olympic Games in Torino, Italy. In addition to his work with NBC, Tim also shares his insights with numerous cable networks throughout the country for their gymnastics broadcasts.

NATIONAL TEAM COACH/USA GYMNASTICS BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Beyond being a successful athlete, Tim’s had a great impact on USA Gymnastics in a variety of areas. As a coach, he’s developed numerous Junior National Champions as well as Senior National Team Members. In addition, Tim was selected as the 1995 World Championship assistant coach.

Tim’s involvement with gymnastics crossed from the gym floor to the board room as he held the position of Vice Chairman for Men, and sat on both the executive committee and board of directors for USA Gymnastics for more than ten years. Along with his duties on the board, Tim also sat on the Men’s Program Committee, which directs all rules, policies, and finances for men’s gymnastics throughout the USA.

With Tim’s varied background he is often called on to travel internationally, helping to secure the United States’ political positions on matters pertaining to the rules that govern international gymnastics.

Tim has established a multimillion-dollar training facility for gymnastics, martial arts, cheerleading, and dance in Agawam, Massachusetts. Over 1000 children of all ages flood to the gym each week to enhance their lives and grow through sport.
