SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Jan. 24, 2008 -- Springfield College and the YMCA of Greater Houston have formed a new partnership to establish the 11th campus of the college’s School of Human Services in Houston. Classes at the new Houston campus will begin in Sept. 2008 at the YMCA of Greater Houston’s William V. Phillips Center for Leadership Development, located at 2122 East Governors Circle.
The partnership agreement was signed on May 24, 2007. State approval to offer undergraduate and graduate programs in Houston was given by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board on December 11, 2007.
“As our programs reach deeper into the community, a well-trained workforce becomes even more important. Our YMCA and our community continue to grow in so many ways and we are thrilled about this venture,” said YMCA of Greater Houston President and CEO Clark Baker.
The creation of this new campus continues the longstanding relationship between Springfield College and YMCAs across the country. Springfield College was founded in 1885 to educate future YMCA leaders, and is designated by the YMCA of the USA as a premiere leadership development center.
“Springfield College has established itself as an institution of higher education that is nationally and internationally recognized for its commitment and expertise in educating leaders in spirit, mind and body for service to humanity,” said Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn.
“This new campus provides an opportunity for YMCA staff and the community to further their education and develop the leadership skills necessary to better serve the people of Houston,” said YMCA of Greater Houston Director of Training Paula Criel.
Springfield College’s School of Human Services offers bachelor’s and master’s degree completion programs at its main campus in Springfield, Mass. and at nine other regional campuses around the country. Programs are designed with weekend classes for adults working in human services.
“The School provides an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach to its learning environment and presents students with valuable professional experience through projects in partnership with community organizations that enable them to make a difference in the lives of others,” said Robert Willey, dean of the School of Human Services.
In addition to the Houston site, Springfield College campuses are located in: Springfield and Boston, Mass.; Los Angeles and San Diego, Calif.; Wilmington, Del.; Tampa Bay, Fla.; Manchester, N.H.; Charleston, S.C.; St. Johnsbury, Vt.; and Milwaukee, Wis.
Springfield College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The undergraduate programs of the Springfield College School of Human Services are accredited by the Council for Standards in Human Service Education.
