Springfield College Annual Scholarly Lectures to Feature Herbert Jervis, Kris Berg

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Jan. 24, 2008 – Herbert H. Jervis, molecular biologist and patent attorney, and Kris Berg, leading authority on exercise for people with diabetes, will deliver Springfield College’s annual scholarly lectures in the fields of biology and physical sciences, and exercise physiology and sport science, respectively, on Feb. 7, 2008.

Jervis will be the speaker at the Briton C. and Lucille McCabe Lecture, at 4 p.m., in Appleton Auditorium of Fuller Arts Center. His topic will be “The Interaction of Science and Law.” Berg will give the Karpovich Lecture at 7 p.m. at the Brennan Center, 45 Island Pond Road. His address is titled, “Metabolism of Non-Steady State Work and Sport.”

Jervis is the retired vice president and chief intellectual property counsel for Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., DuPont’s largest agricultural business, where he was in charge of corporate patents and trademarks. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Springfield College, master’s and doctoral degrees from Florida State University, and a juris doctorate from St. John’s University. He is a member of the Springfield College Board of Trustees.

Berg, director of the Exercise Physiology Lab at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, is the 2008 Alliance Scholar for the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. He has received numerous grants supporting his work and various awards for his contributions to research, teaching, mentoring, and the field of physiology. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Kansas and doctoral degree from the University of Missouri.

Springfield College’s McCabe and Karpovich lectures annually bring leaders in these fields to the campus to discuss timely topics and discoveries for the benefit of students, professionals in these fields, and the community at large. They are open to the public free of charge.

The college established the Karpovich Lecture in 1973 in memory of its former faculty member Peter V. Karpovich, who was an internationally recognized exercise physiologist and one of the principal founders of the American College of Sports Medicine.

The annual Britton C. McCabe Lecture, established in 1997, is named in honor of the former chair of the Springfield College Biology Department, and is supported by the Britton C. McCabe Endowment Fund.
