Springfield College Names Harry Rock Director, Ymca Relations

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., December 21, 2007 – Springfield College has appointed Harry F. Rock of Westfield, Mass. as its director of YMCA relations, effective Feb. 1, 2008. Rock will have senior staff responsibilities for managing and expanding the college’s partnership with the YMCA of the USA and its programs and supporting services for students preparing for YMCA careers.

In announcing the appointment, Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn said, “Harry Rock brings an impressive record of YMCA leadership and commitment to the common values that guide the YMCA and Springfield College – dedication to the holistic development of the spirit, mind and body, and commitment to service to humanity. We are pleased that he will play a key role as we advance more than a century of collaboration between the YMCA and Springfield College.”

Rock has been executive director of the YMCA of Greater Westfield since 1991. He joined the YMCA staff in New London, Conn., in 1981 and rose in the YMCA organization through a succession of increasingly responsible positions in Connecticut and New Jersey. He began his career as a middle school educator in Connecticut and a YMCA camp director.

Springfield College was founded in 1885 to educate YMCA leaders and remains designated by the YMCA of the USA as a premiere leadership development center. The college recruits students nationwide who aspire to YMCA careers. It offers a YMCA Career Candidate Scholarship, and maintains a fund to match tuition support for students from local YMCAs. In addition, the college offers an executive master’s program designed for YMCA professionals who wish to expand their leadership capabilities to help people, organizations, and communities meet the challenges of change.

In his new position, Rock also will have key responsibilities for overseeing the YMCA Hall of Fame (located on the Springfield College campus) and maintaining relationships with YMCAs and alumni throughout the United States.

A graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University, Rock has received several awards for leadership and service to community organizations, including a 2006 United Way of the Pioneer Valley award for programming excellence and collaborative efforts with other non-profits. He is active in numerous community organizations, and serves in leadership positions in several.
