SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 13, 2007 – H. Todd Stitzer, chief executive officer of Cadbury Schweppes, told Springfield College graduates receiving their bachelor’s degrees today, “You can win against the big guys if you’re focussed, faster and smarter and your team feels they are recognized for it. As a leader you must put the team before yourself.”

“Don’t do it just for the money or the fame. Make sure you have a higher purpose that is consistent with your own values. I know that I’m preaching to the converted on this one. The majority of you will dedicate your working lives to helping others in one form or other,” Stitzer said at 9:30 a.m. ceremonies at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass.

“Finally, you must do all of the above with passion. Passion is at the bottom of all progress. With it, there is accomplishment. Without it, there are only alibis. Class of 2007, my challenge to you is to dare greatly with passion,” Stitzer concluded.

At the ceremony attended by more than 6,400 graduates, guests, and members of the faculty and administration, Springfield College awarded 980 bachelor’s degrees to graduates of its schools of Arts, Sciences and Professional Studies; Health, Physical Education and Recreation; Health Sciences and Rehabilitation Studies; and Human Services.

The college also awarded honorary doctor of humanics degrees to Stitzer, Brigadier General Paul E. Lefebvre, USMC, and Andrew Wing-Kee Luk.

Springfield College, historically, has awarded honorary degrees to a few outstanding individuals who, by their character and accomplishments, personify the college’s guiding philosophy, humanics. The philosophy emphasizes the dedication of spirit, mind and body for leadership in service to others.

In conferring the honor, Springfield College cited Stitzer as a socially responsible corporate leader who has demonstrated simultaneous high business performance and high community stewardship. Lefebvre is a Springfield College graduate who has conducted numerous humanitarian efforts in his 30-year career in the U. S. Marines. Luk is the founder of printing and transportation businesses who supports many charitable and human services in Hong Kong.

Yesterday, Springfield College awarded master’s and doctoral degrees and certificates of advanced studies to 750 graduates in separate ceremonies for graduate students on Naismith Green on the Springfield campus.
