Springfield College to Launch Information Storage
Technology Courses
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 3, 2007 – Springfield College will introduce courses in information storage technologies, beginning with a seminar in the spring of 2008 and adding increasingly complex courses each semester through the fall of 2009.
In developing the program, the college is partnering with EMC Corporation, a major worldwide provider of products, services and solutions for information management and storage. EMC’s solutions are caretakers for more than two-thirds of the world’s most essential information. Springfield College faculty members in computer information sciences will receive advanced training from EMC.
According to Peter J. Polito, Ph.D., chair of the Springfield College Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Department, “Storage is a high growth segment in the information technologies industry. More than a million new professionals will be needed by 2012. There are excellent career opportunities in this $60 billion industry for graduates with advanced training.”
Following the introductory seminar in information storage technologies, Springfield College will follow a “building block” approach, progressively adding beginner, intermediate, and advanced courses.
The foundation curriculum will provide a core understanding of storage technologies, and progress into system architectures, introduction to networked storage, and introduction to information availability. Using case studies and examples, students will simulate choices and risks that storage professionals face daily. In advanced courses, students further will develop skills and learn to design and manage complex networked storage infrastructures.
Springfield College offers a bachelor’s degree program in computer information sciences with concentrations in information systems, software development, and game programming.
