SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Feb. 21, 2007 -- Springfield College and Holyoke Community College (HCC) will jointly admit qualified students for a new program that applies HCC associate’s degree credits toward a bachelor’s degree at Springfield College. The first class in the new program will enter HCC this fall.
Acceptance into the new joint admission program guarantees entrance to Springfield College for any HCC graduate with a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) in one of 16 designated fields of study. Springfield College will award a $10,000 scholarship to its campus for any HCC graduate in the program with a GPA above 3.49, and a $7,000 scholarship for those with GPAs of 3.2 to 3.49.
According to Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn, “This new program will allow our two institutions to combine our educational resources to prepare area residents for success in careers vital to our region. It joins the affordability of high quality general education at the associate’s degree level, with specialized education in major fields of study at the bachelor’s degree level.”
Mark Broadbent, HCC director of transfer affairs, said, “Springfield College has always been a great community education partner. We are thrilled to work with them to give all students an opportunity to attain a college degree.”
The colleges have worked together to assure that HCC courses in the joint admissions program and Springfield College’s general education requirements are equivalent. Students usually take these courses in the first two years of a bachelor’s degree program. HCC students will receive 60 credits toward the Springfield College bachelor’s degree, which requires 120 credits.
Bachelor’s degree programs at Springfield College in the joint admission program are American studies, art, biology, business management, communications/sports journalism, computer graphics, computer information sciences, criminal justice, early childhood education licensure, English, general studies, mathematics, and psychology.
Springfield College also has a joint admissions agreement with Springfield Technical Community College.
