SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Jan. 25, 2007 – Getting a head start on National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD), Springfield College coaches and student athletes will conduct free clinics for girls in grades three through eight in softball, gymnastics, tennis, yoga, rock climbing, and leadership games this Saturday, Jan. 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Physical Education Complex, on the campus.

Springfield College’s events for school girls are scheduled to take advantage of the weekend. The 21st annual NGWSD, organized by the National Girls and Women in Sport Coalition, will be on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007.

According to Kelly Hart, Springfield College associate athletic director, “This national celebration of women’s sports achievements is an ideal time to introduce girls to a variety of activities that promote a healthy lifestyle. Our faculty members and students are strongly committed to the role of physical education in students’ development and have volunteered for this day of physical fitness and fun.”

Coaches have designed the clinics for girls of all abilities, from beginner through advanced, to learn or improve skills. Each clinic will include four age groups. Women’s Gymnastics Coach Cheryl Raymond, Softball Coach Kathy Mangano, and East Campus Assistant Director Ben Taylor will be supported by assistant coaches and student-athletes. Also coaching will be Laura Moshenko, owner of Garden of Ohm Yoga.

Girls may bring a brown-bag lunch and stay for the Springfield College v. Clark University men’s basketball game at 1 p.m. Also part of the celebration will be the Springfield College v. Rhode Island College women’s gymnastics meet on Sunday, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m.

Space is available for 200 participants. Girls may register in advance through the Springfield College website or by calling (413) 748-3484. Walk-in registration, on a space-available basis, will be at 8:30 a.m. Additional information is available from Tracy Granozio, Springfield College Athletics Department, and (413) 748-3484.
