Springfield College Receives Super 60 Award

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 9, 2006 – Springfield College received the 2006 Super 60 Award for Revenue from the Affiliated Chambers of Commerce of Greater Springfield, Inc. (ACCGS) at an Oct. 27 awards luncheon attended by almost 700 chamber members. College President Richard B. Flynn accepted a plaque from Jeannie Pelchat, executive vice president of PeoplesBank, and Peter Straley, president and chief executive officer of Health New England.

The annual award recognizes the top businesses in the region that make significant contributions to the strength of the regional economy. The college was the second of 30 companies recognized for total revenue. Also recognized for total growth were 30 companies.

Responding to the award, Flynn said, “We are proud to be a strong contributor to the economic revitalization in Greater Springfield. Springfield College’s economic impact is more than our substantial budget and employee base. As an institution of higher learning, we are in a unique position to strengthen the economy and quality of life in the region. By creatively utilizing the talents of our students, faculty and staff in learning experiences that address community needs; by leveraging our resources; and by working in partnership with other stakeholders, we are acting on our commitment to make our community a better place in which to live, work and learn.”

Springfield College’s economic impact on the Greater Springfield region surpasses $184 million annually. Among the components are its more than $2 million spent on community outreach-related programs and $1,120,000 invested in scholarship funds for Springfield residents. The college’s payroll for area residents surpasses $44 million, and its purchases exceed $43 million in goods and services in the area. Campus capital improvements in the past five years were more than $19 million.

In September, the college was named one of the 25 “best neighbor” urban colleges in the United States in a report by Evan Dobelle, president of the New England Board of Higher Education. The “Saviors of Our Cities” list cited colleges for dramatically strengthening the economy and quality of life in their neighboring communities by careful strategic planning and use of resources.
