Summer Fun Is A Week Of Math And Science For City Kids At SC
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., July 6, 2005 -- Summer fun for 25 middle school students from the City of Springfield is a $500 scholarship each for a week of math and science activities at Springfield College July 11 to 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Emerging Scientists Summer Program is designed to make math and science exciting for youngsters in grades seven through nine so that they will choose challenging science-oriented courses in high school and consider science careers. Participants were chosen by their teachers because of their potential for high achievement in science.
Springfield College faculty members and student aides will lead activities in computer science, biology, statistics, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, as well as field trips. Programs are scheduled in the college’s computer and science laboratories and classrooms. Students will take lunch in the college’s dining facility and daily recreational swims in its Art Linkletter Natatorium.
The program marks the beginning of a year of math and science support for participating youngsters. Springfield College faculty and students will conduct activities at Brookings and other urban middle schools periodically during the upcoming academic year.
The Emerging Scientists Summer Program is funded by the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education's "Pipeline Fund" to the Pioneer Valley STEM Network, which is led by UMass Amherst. Springfield College is one of two Network partners providing summer camps this year.
