Medical Schools To Grant Early Acceptance To SC Students

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 1, 2004 -- New agreements between Springfield College and the Medical College of Wisconsin, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, and New York College of Podiatric Medicine will guarantee admission to outstanding Springfield College students who meet the medical schools’ admissions criteria.

The Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee (MCW) will reserve two admissions slots annually for Springfield College graduates who fulfill its requirements. Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pa. (LECOM) and New York College of Podiatric Medicine in New York City (NYCPM) will admit qualified Springfield College students after their third year, with the first year of medical school also satisfying requirements for Springfield College’s fourth year of undergraduate study for the bachelor’s degree.

According to Mary Healey, Springfield College dean of the School of Arts, Sciences, and Professional Studies, "This is a wonderful opportunity for students who are committed to pursuing careers in medicine. It will allow them the peace of mind of medical school acceptance in their second or third year at Springfield College, so that they can focus on maintaining academic excellence and gaining clinical experience as they complete their bachelor’s degrees.

“Medical schools accept only outstanding students who are committed to devoting their lives to medicine and human service. It is a testimony to the high regard in which these respected institutions hold the Springfield College education that they have offered early acceptance to our qualified students. History shows that our graduates finish in the upper third of their medical school class."

The Medical College of Wisconsin will accept up to two Springfield College students in their sophomore year who, then, complete their bachelor’s degrees at Springfield College and begin medical school following graduation. To qualify, students must achieve a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.5 overall, and 3.6 in the sciences. They also must complete required courses in science, mathematics and English, and score at least nine in numeric sections of the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and N in the writing sample. In addition to fulfilling other requirements, they must maintain their GPAs and continue to gain clinical experience and perform community service.

To be accepted at LECOM, Springfield College students must apply by Sept. 1 of their senior year and maintain minimum scores of 3.2 on their GPA and 24 on the MCAT with at least seven in each subtest. They also must complete at least 90 credit hours and prerequisite courses of both LECOM and Springfield College.

Among the requirements for Springfield College students to be accepted at NYCPM, they must maintain a minimum score of 3 on their GPA and complete prerequisite courses. Their MCAT scores must be at least equal to NYCPM’s current minimum.

In 2002, Springfield College announced similar preferred admissions agreements with the Arizona and Kirksville colleges of osteopathic medicine (AZCOM and KCOM). AZCOM, in Glendale, Ariz., reserves three admissions slots annually for Springfield College graduates who fulfill its requirements. KCOM, in Kirksville, Mo., accepts a maximum of two qualified Springfield College students who are notified at the end of their sophomore year of their acceptances pending completion of their bachelor’s degrees at Springfield College.

Healey said that she is optimistic about her discussions with several additional medical schools considering preferred consideration agreements for Springfield College students.
