SC To Hold Opening Ceremony For New Student Residence Hall

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 30, 2004 -- Springfield College will hold an official opening ceremony for The Suites, its new $10 million student residence hall, on Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. in the courtyard at the building entrance.

Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn will join Student Government President Aaron Dombroski; current and former Springfield College Board of Trustees Chairs Lyman Wood and John A. Odierna; and President of Fontaine Bros., Inc. David Fontaine; as well as members of the student body, faculty and staff, for a ribbon cutting ceremony at the building’s entrance. Tours of the facility and light refreshments will follow.

The professionally landscaped four-story brick building is a self-contained living environment with many conveniences for its senior student occupants. It includes 48 air-conditioned suites, each with four or six single bedrooms, one or two baths, living room, kitchen, and dining area. Each student’s room contains telephone, cable television, and Internet connections, and eight of the units are barrier-free.

According to Flynn, “Living on the campus clearly supports Springfield College’s educational program, and we are committed to enhancing our traditional residential nature.”

The new structure is the first new student residence that the college has built since its Townhouses 15 years ago. According to Flynn, “It is part of our ongoing program to improve facilities in support of attracting top students to our campus.” The architectural and interior design firm of Tessier Associates designed the building, with Fontaine Bros., Inc. serving as general contractor. Both firms are local. The college financed construction through the issuance of tax-exempt revenue bonds.

Odierna said that the new residence hall is the latest example of improvements within the college’s master plan to maintain excellence in its academic programs and student life. He described several recent campus improvements including major renovations of Cheney Hall, Wilbraham Hall, the Brennan Center, and the Office of Admissions; construction of a new president’s house; and completion of several other facilities and grounds projects.
