Concerts, Theatre, Art Exhibitions Free At SC This Fall

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 6, 2004 -- Springfield College’s fall series of visual and performing arts programs open to the public free of charge will feature a lineup of fine art exhibitions, concerts, theatre productions, fiction and poetry readings by award-winning area authors, and a dance concert by guest artists and student artists. “The Life of James Mars: A Slave Born and Sold in Connecticut”
By: Puppetsweat Theater
The compelling, inspirational, autobiographical story of one of Connecticut's African American heroes presented in a multi-media adaptation using actors, puppets, projections and animations. Puppetsweat Theatre has performed at the Jim Henson International Festival of Puppet Theatre, La Mama E.T.C., PS 122, and the HERE Arts Center.

Fiction and Poetry Reading
By: David Lloyd and James Finnegan

Exploring the private lives, loves, fears, and cruelties of adolescent boys, Lloyd reads from his newest book, “Boys: Stories and a Novella.” Reviewer Michael White says the stories "ring with the sort of varnished truth only a writer of Lloyd's considerable skill can bring to them. When you finish the book, you can only wonder how any boy in America survives to manhood." Among Lloyd’s many honors: Poetry Society of America’s Robert H. Winner Memorial Award, judged by W. D. Snodgrass, and Distinguished Scholar Fulbright Award.

James Finnegan's emotionally charged, intelligent, and exquisitely crafted poems have appeared in many of the best literary magazines, including “Ploughshares,” “Poetry East,” The Southern Review,” and “The Virginia Quarterly Review.” Finnegan has been an active supporter of poetry in the U.S., including founding a literary press, organizing poetry workshops and readings, beginning an Internet poetry discussion listserv, and serving on the board of "The Friends & Enemies of Wallace Stevens." One of his poems was featured on Garrison Keillor’s radio program, "The Writer’s Almanac." Refreshments and book signing will follow.

SC Theatre presents a bittersweet comedy and tender drama about how to belong to the one group you didn't choose for yourself: your family! Estranged parents and children and quirky siblings reunite in this warm-hearted play, which encourages us to see care giving as a road to reconciliation and love. Marvin's Room delightfully awakens our spirit of sharing.
