SC Student Named Martin Luther King Jr. Scholar

Stacey Jackson, a social work student at Springfield College, has been named a Martin Luther King Jr. Scholar by the U.S. Department of Education. The scholarship is part of a program for outstanding undergraduate and graduate students whose academic achievement and community service honor the legacy of the renowned civil rights leader’s contributions to public service and humanity. She will serve as an intern under U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige.

Jackson, who graduated with honors from Hampton University, Virginia, in May 2003 with a degree in psychology, returned to her hometown of Springfield, Mass., to pursue a master’s degree in social work at Springfield College. Committed to keeping King’s dream alive through service within her community, Jackson has been serving as an AmeriCorps volunteer at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Springfield and is an active member in the prestigious psychology national honor society, Psi Chi. "Thirty-six years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated,” said Secretary Paige, “but his dream did not die. It lives on in young people like Miss Jackson. She is a highly educated, highly motivated young lady who symbolizes Dr. King’s goal of striving to make a difference. I commend Miss Jackson and welcome her expertise as we continue our efforts to implement historic education reform."
