SC To Expand Graduate Evening Programs This Summer

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., July 28, 2004 -- Springfield College will expand its range of evening classes for master’s degrees and also for several programs that prepare graduate students for state licensure, beginning this summer.

Responding to demand from working adults, the college will offer evening master’s degree programs in education, occupational therapy, psychology, rehabilitation counseling and services, and physical education. Licensure preparation programs will be available in education and physical education. In rehabilitation counseling and services, post-bachelor’s programs will be offered.

According to Jean A. Wyld, Springfield College vice president for academic affairs, “Our research shows that many adults working in these fields need advanced education to acquire or maintain the latest knowledge and skill, and to qualify for job advancement. They also need to maintain their jobs while pursuing their studies. These evening classes will make available to working adults the same Springfield College graduate education that has prepared leaders in many fields for more than a century.”

A three-week mini session, with classes Monday through Thursday, will run from May 17 through June 3. Six-week sessions and eight-week sessions will begin June 7, with classes twice weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays, or Tuesdays and Thursdays. Classes will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m., or 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Information sessions on the new evening degree program are scheduled for Wednesday, March 10, and Tuesday, April 6, in the Townhouses Conference Room on the campus. Faculty members and advisors will be available as well as financial aid and graduate admissions staff members and current students. Potential students also will have the opportunity to arrange to attend a class in their field.

“Working adults who study at night are serious, focused people with aspirations and also many pressures on their time,” Wyld added. “We’ve scheduled many campus services to make this convenient for them. On opening night of classes, we’ll offer “one stop shopping” to register, get ID cards and parking stickers, and pay bills. Classes will be held in air-conditioned, spacious Locklin Hall with food service in the building and parking in adjacent lots. Our library will be open evenings and weekends,” she said.

In addition to the new evening degrees program, Springfield College offers traditional daytime graduate programs in 14 fields, as well as undergraduate programs in 50 major fields of study.
