ABC Anchor Roberts Advises Springfield College Grads

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 17, 2003 -- Robin Roberts, news anchor for ABC News' "Good Morning America," told graduates of Springfield College's advanced degree programs this morning to position themselves for success, make the necessary sacrifices, and to think big but focus on small steps. Roberts was the commencement speaker and received an honorary degree of doctor of humanics at outdoor ceremonies on the campus' Administration Green.

Roberts described her own formula for her rise to national prominence as a groundbreaking sports and news broadcaster. "Proximity is power," she said. "Your being here today tells me that you have put yourself in a position to succeed and you have made sacrifices. It is important to know your strengths and weaknesses. Never lose sight of the big picture, and take steps toward your goal." She added, "God's delays aren't his denials."

In awarding her the honorary doctoral degree, the college cited Roberts for setting a bold example for excellence, innovation and versatility in her work and for opening opportunities for women in the field of sports journalism. Jean A. Wyld, Springfield College vice president for academic affairs, read a citation crediting Roberts' "life and work that exemplify the Springfield College philosophy of humanics, which emphasizes dedication of the whole person - spirit, mind, and body - for leadership in service to humanity."

At its 117th commencement, Springfield College awarded 478 master's and doctoral degrees, physician assistant certificates and certificates of advanced study. Ceremonies for undergraduates are scheduled for tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. on Blake Field on the campus. Rep. Richard E. Neal (D-Mass.) will be the speaker. The college will award honorary degrees of doctor of humanics to Neal and Liz Thompson, former executive director of Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival and School, which was founded by former Springfield College faculty member Ted Shawn.
