SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 30, 2003 – The earth moved at Springfield College today as excavation began for construction of a new $10 to $11 million suite-style student residence hall scheduled to open in August 2004.

Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn, Board of Trustees Chairman John A. Odierna, Student Trustee J. Larson Segerdahl, and other college officials turned the first shovels at the Alden Street site of the future four-story brick building.

Flynn announced that the college has chosen the architectural and interior design firm of Tessier Associates, Inc. and general contracting firm of Fontaine Bros., Inc. for the project. Both firms are local.

The new structure, which will house about 200 students, is the first new student residence for the college since its Townhouses were built 13 years ago. “This new residence hall will primarily house seniors and will provide an opportunity for our undergraduate students to live on the campus for the entire time they are at Springfield College,” Flynn said. “It is part of our ongoing program of facilities improvements to support and enhance our efforts to continue to attract top students to our campus. It is also perfectly in keeping with the traditional residential character of our main campus,” he added.

The new building, which has not yet been named, will face the college’s Townhouses and an open grassy space will be maintained between the buildings. It will include about 40 units, each with four or six single bedrooms, one or two baths, living room, kitchen, and dining area. It will be air-conditioned and each student’s room will contain telephone, cable television, and Internet connections.

Odierna said that the new residence hall is the latest example of improvements within the college’s master plan to maintain excellence in its academic programs and student life. He described several recent campus improvements including major renovations of Wilbraham Hall, the Brennan Center, and the Office of Admissions; construction of a new president’s house; and completion of several other facilities and grounds projects.

The college plans to finance construction of the new residence hall through issuance of tax-exempt revenue bonds. Advest will be the college’s bond counsel and Massachusetts Health and Educational Facilities Authority will be the bond issuer.
