Sci-Fi Film Festival At Springfield College
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 7, 2003 -- The free public Science Fiction Film Festival at Springfield College will feature scholarly introductions to landmarks of the genre by college faculty on March 30 and 31, 2003. "Contact," "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," and "Blade Runner, The Director’s Cut," will be shown in Fuller Arts Center on the campus. Short films by computer graphics students will precede each feature film."Contact," starring Jodie Foster, is the visually exciting 1977 film based on Carl Sagan’s novel of first contact between humans and possible intelligent life on other planets. Professor of Film Carol Mitchell will introduce the film at 2 p.m., Sunday. According to Mitchell, "Science fiction films provide viewers with fascinating visions of the future and frequently reflect societal concerns with war, politics, and the advancements of technology."
"Invasion of the Body Snatchers," the 1950’s classic thriller, will begin a double feature on Monday at 2 p.m. Epitomizing the height of 1950s B-movie films on mass paranoia, the film depicts a society invaded by aliens who replicate the shapes of human beings. Assistant Professor of Art and Computer Graphics Ruth West will give the introduction.
"Blade Runner, The Director’s Cut," considered a sci-fi cult classic, is scheduled for Monday at 7 p.m. Set in a dark and decaying Los Angeles of the future, the film stars Harrison Ford as a retired and world-weary bounty hunter, who is reluctantly forced to track down and destroy rogue androids.
