Cultural Connections – Letter to Students

Welcome to the incoming Class of 2013 at Springfield College. During your college experience, there will be many opportunities to embrace the College mission and to grow in spirit, mind, and body, as well as numerous ways to participate in making a positive difference on campus and in supporting the local community.

The mission of Springfield College builds, sustains, and strengthens a campus community that is rich in cultural diversity and embraces multicultural activities through workshops, educational and cultural programs, as well as support services. As you begin your fall semester 2009, you will find that we are united as one community that promotes the success of all.

To welcome you to campus, the Multicultural Affairs Department invites you to participate in Building Unity through Community: A Cultural Connections Program, which takes place September 2 and 3. This event precedes New Student Orientation and serves as an option to Pre – Camp, scheduled, September 1-4. As a participant you will have an opportunity to meet and bond with students from racially and culturally diverse backgrounds.

Additionally, you and your family are invited to a dinner reception September 2, at 6:30 p.m. For a $20.00 per guest ticket, you will experience a dinner entitled Fine Dining around the World, which features a menu, consisting of delicious ethnic foods, inspirational speeches from Springfield College alumni, and R and B music from two of our talented former student vocalists.

Highlighting the activities scheduled September 3, includes a workshop on diversity, facilitated by the Director of Multicultural Affairs, followed by an academic support session, presented by the Academic Support Office. Following lunch, participants will be transported by bus to the Springfield Quadrangular Museum, Basketball Hall of Fame and Six Flags New England. Your Cultural Connections experience concludes with a pizza party.

In addition to a $20.00 dinner fee, a fee of $20.00 is also requested from students making the trip to Six Flags New England. Please complete the enclosed application and return it with a check or money order, payable to Springfield College and send it to the Multicultural Affairs Department, Springfield College, 263 Alden Street, Springfield, MA 01109-3797. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (413) 748-3249. I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,
