Class of '74 Reunion Letters

April 2004

Dear Classmates & friends,

Reunion weekend is just around the corner. We hope you've decided to attend. No matter what decision you make, there is info below that is pertinent. Please read on...

For reunion attendees:

When you receive your reunion brochure, please send the registration form in asap. We’d like to have a ballpark number so we can tweak any last minute details that might need adjusting. If you plan to play in the golf tournament on Friday you should have filled out a separate registration. Go on line www.springfieldcollege.edu or call the Alumni Office 413-748-3161, if you require more info.

Our hospitality suite will be in the 8th floor lounge of International. Classmate Todd Stitzer & Dr. Pepper/7 Up are generously providing us with ice coolers, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, 7 up (and diet variations), orange soda, water, tonic water and soda water. We will have ice and cups. We will have a refrigerator. We will have coffee (regular & decaf), hot water, tea bags, sweetener, milk and half & half. We plan to buy muffins and cereal for breakfast. If you want a special kind of cereal plan to bring it with you. We'll supply the bowls, spoons and the rest of the paper products. If you need a more substantial breakfast you will be able to buy it a la carte at the snack bar in the BC. We ask those of you driving to campus to please bring some munchies for the class pantry. We'll use these for our informal parties in the lounge, Happy Hour, and the party at camp.

International is not the Ritz but it's our home for the weekend. We each get a pillow, sheets, a blanket and a towel. If you prefer a big towel you should pack one. Don't forget a robe for getting to and from the bathroom (you're not fast enough to streak any more). If the weather is hot you might want to bring a fan for your window. If you desire a cooler for your room you will need to supply your own. Likewise, if you want music in your room you should bring a boom box.

We will have a tape/CD player and a TV/VCR in the lounge. If you want to augment our selection of music bring your tapes & CDs. We will have videos from past reunions and homecomings, yearbooks, pictures and the alumni directory. If you have pictures of our student days we'd love to see them.

If you can't live without your laptop, please know that every room in International has a connection to the Internet. There are two ways to get on line from International. 1) Ethernet and 2) Dial-up to your provider. You will need to bring your own laptop and cable/wires.

It's been a while since any of us have been out camping in the evening this time of year - bug spray might be good to have. If you plan to explore while we're there you might want a flashlight. Don't forget your glasses if you need them to read song lyrics (believe me, you won't be the only one with glasses).

For those of you who can't join us:

If you have a computer and Internet access you will be able to log on and watch some of our events live. Please read Roger Winkelman's letter below for instructions.

If you would like to send us a card or letter to be posted in the 8th floor lounge, please address it to:

Dear Class of '74 members,
When I started working here at Stanford, a groundbreaking, techno-savvy senior associate said to me, "Roger, when you harness technology, be very careful, the yoke could end up on your shoulders." Well, everyday I go to work remembering those words, fearing my pre-retirement years could be lived out like ancient myth Atlas, computers strapped to my back, as I climb an infinite stairwell. What's this have to do with Carol Doyle and the reunion committee? Nothing!

None of you have said, "Roger, you'd better be careful about what you promise to Carol Doyle, you might wind up carrying computers up rally hill forever." Maybe because as a ’74 ledge, my 'adopted' classmates just aren’t talking? We are talking video on the Internet. Smoke and mirrors? I'm telling you now it's almost show time and I’m going to the stables to find the technology and saddle up. Whether you are a show or no-show on June 10 -13, the truth is, you can join us during or after the big outing by clicking on the reunion schedule events on the class of '74 web page. The reunion committee has really stuck their neck out, but we think this will be a first for ANY reunion, risking absolutely nothing by harnessing technology for you and your family.

Note: This is NOT just for computer JOCKS who aren't driving, flying or jogging back to campus June 10- 13. It is NOT a gimmick to get you to drop money in the bucket. It's thirty years, a big bash, its for POSTERITY, you've read the testimonials.

This isn't some postage stamp video on the monitor challenging you to recognize a few faces; it’s going to be SCTV. Join us LIVE ON THE WEB, a parade of classes, an exclusive dinner party, an intimate midnight international penthouse get together. Who are you looking for while checking out the web video? Well, how about random greetings from the roaming camera? FACE OFF with music from Keith Naylor (calluses so tough the ladies still run away).

SCTV reunion TEST LINKS and more info is on the class web so you should try it out for yourself before the big weekend. There's even a tech support link, I'll help you make it work.

Classmates,

You folks reading this probably didn't know me when we were in school together. You probably knew who I was and we acknowledged each other as we attended classes but I had very few close friends when I was at Springfield. This was my fault. I didn't get involved in any activities and took a couple of winters off to ski so I just wasn't in the main stream of the class of '74. For the past 20 years I have acted in the capacity of the Class of '74 President. What caused such a dramatic turnabout? Why is it that most of the people reading this letter know what I do, where I live, what I do on my vacations? This transformation occurred because I made a decision to attend the class of '74 10th reunion back in 1984. This changed my life. Since 1984, I have made close friendships with many of my classmates that I didn't even talk to when I was a student. These wonderful new and renewed relationships have enriched my life.

If you have been to a reunion, this message is not for you. You know exactly what I'm talking about. This message is for the fence sitters that are wondering if, after all these years, you should carve out some time in June to go back for the reunion. Remember the old Nike commercial? "JUST DO IT"! It may feel strange. It may make you feel uneasy, but once you set foot back on campus and we are all there to welcome you with open arms, you will know that you made the right decision.

A lot of classmates took their time making their way back to Springfield but every one that did, wants to come back again and again.

We want you to be there too! Today you need to set aside the time to return your reunion registration form and make plans to join us. Even if it's for only one day!

You've seen the schedule; you've read the testimonials. What more can we say to convince you? If you are still looking for a reason to return to campus, how about doing it for the sense of adventure? Remember when you were packing up your belongings to head out to SC for the first time? Most of us knew very few people on campus but we were ready for an adventure and the prospect of making new friends. This reunion adventure isn't quite so daunting - you've already spent 4 years on campus walking the paths and saying hello along the way. You know the place; you remember some of the people. Springfield College was your home and still is. Come back to campus and find that inner child. Rekindle the memories that shaped your thoughts and helped make you the person you are today. At the very least you will be with a group of people who are all the same age (your age!) and enjoy the same music (we have 2 nights of live music!). You can turn back the hands of time for one brief moment and laugh like you haven't laughed in years. There's a reason for all of us to come to the reunion - once you come back to Springfield College you'll discover your own reason why. Be adventurous and the reason will become apparent by the end of the weekend.
