Ph.D., International Relations/Third World Politics/ International Political Economy, University of Mass., 1990. Associate Professor and Coordinator of the YMCA Africa Academic Degree Program in SHS. Founder and first president of African-American Development, Education, Research and Training Institute (AADERT). Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Public Affairs and Issues (JOPAI), Albany State University. Committed to Social Justice, critical thinking, and quality education. Has traveled widely in Africa to teach YMCA Executives. Author of numerous books and articles. Most recent, “Africa In the Contemporary International Disorder.”

Richard Andersen
Ph.D., American Literature, New York University, 1976. Associate Professor of Writing and Literature SHS. He is a former Fulbright Professor and James Thurber Writer in Residence. Richard has published five books on writing, four novels, two critical studies, an examination of contemporary education, and a biography of Michael and Catherine Karolyi. Along with Helene Hinis, he has authored “Writing Wrongs! The Springfield College Guide to Clear and Correct Writing.”

JoAnn Dewrance
Ed.D., American International College. Assistant Professor Also coordinator of the Support Center, SHS. Community activities involve volunteer consultant for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Springfield and volunteer consultant for project, Undoing Racism in South Africa. She also has manuscripts in progress: The Great Stumbling Block: Math Anxiety, Math for the Adult Learner.

Roberta Harro
Ed.D., Social Justice Education, University of Massachusetts. Committed to social justice, with special focus on combating racism, sexism, heterosexism, Jewish oppression, classism, ageism, and disability oppression in the college, the community, and society as a whole. Thirty years of experience in education, substance abuse prevention, social justice consultation. Thirteen years at the School of Human Services. Coordinator of the ACE (Accelerated Certification for Educators) teacher preparation concentration in the SHS undergraduate curriculum. Contributing author to Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice and Readings for Diversity and Social Justice.

Joanne Silver Jones
Ed. D., University of Massachusetts, 1976. Professor SHS. Committed to social justice and higher education. Over 25 years experience as an educator, consultant and writer. Member of the New England Organization of Human Service Educators (NEOHSE), and Council for Standards in Human Service Education, Director, New England Region. Also, numerous publications, among them: “Knowing your Students” in Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice: A sourcebook for teachers and trainers.

Joan Milkalson
Ed. D. Student Development and Pupil Services, University of Massachusetts; C.A.G. S. Travel Administration, Bay Path College. Joan teaches in the undergraduate and graduate programs of the School of Human Services. Her professional interests include action research, nonprofit organization development, and the design and delivery of adult learning systems.

SHS employs full-time faculty who are responsible for teaching, service, and scholarship. The SHS practice-oriented curriculum also includes contributions from part-time faculty who are directly involved in agency and community work. The result is that SHS has a faculty with the flexibility, resources and expertise required to address academics as well as new developments in human services practice and delivery.
