ANNUAL NEWSLETTER-JANUARY 2006
GREETINGS FROM YOUR PRESIDENT AND THE REUNION COMMITTEE:
We hope that this holiday season will be good to you and yours. We are starting to realize that we are fortunate to still be around. We had hoped that our efforts in WWII would now have provided the world with a place where everyone could live in peace, but unfortunately we see that this is not so.
Once again, a Veterans Day Service was held at the College. The service was very meaningful to all who attended. The Veteran’s Day speaker was Marine Capt. Scott Heaney, class of ’96, who has spent time in Afganistan. He emphasized that it is a job that needs doing and that we all must realize that freedom is not free.
You will be pleased to know that an anonymous five hundred thousand dollar gift was given to name the new soccer complex in memory of the late soccer coach Irv Schmid ’43. The donor has issued a matching challenge to have the entire complex named in Coach’s memory. We all remember him very fondly and are happy that he is being recognized.
Since our June reunion the Toll of The Years has taken four of our classmates: Roger True Bryant, Paul T. Holcombe, Hugh “Huck” Lamb, and M. Luther Marchant. Roger was one of my best friends at Springfield and “Huck” was a very valuable member of our Reunion Committee. An additional note of interest: Sally, Roger’s wife joined him thirty days later.
I have received some suggestions for our next reunion. Dick Sell president of the class of ’49 has indicated that they would like to consider joining with us, next reunion. How do you feel about that? Please send any suggestions along.
The Development Office reports that this fiscal year to date, our class has donated $20,159. This includes gifts to the Annual Fund as well as restricted funds and campaign projects. Please note that the Springfield College fiscal year is changing. This year, the fiscal year runs from June 1, 2005 to June 30, 2006. From then on it will run from July 1 to June 30.
As a class we have much to be thankful for, Uncle Sam provided most of us with an education that would not have been possible without his assistance. I have always felt that this was the best expenditure of money that he ever made. The return on this investment, both financially and in service to mankind is incalculable.
My New Years wish to you is for you to stay healthy and enjoy life to its fullest. May the Good Lord continue to bless you.
Best wishes,Your President
Norm Hiersche
