Nadira Charaniya, Ph.D.

Nadira K. Charaniya, your instructor for "Power and Accountability", has seven years experience as full-time faculty and then Assistant Dean/Campus Director with the School of Human Services. In addition to her current affiliation with the School of Human Services as an adjunct for the Houston Campus and the Executive Master's Program, she is Secretary on the Board of Directors of the National Organization for Human Services and editor of the organization's newsletter. Prior to relocating from California, Nadira was on the Board of the Miller Family YMCA in Newbury Park, California. Her areas of expertise include leadership and management development, multicultural education, adult education, critical theory, collaborative inquiry, and interfaith dialogue. Nadira K. Charaniya


Henry Smith, III, Ph.D.

Henry Smith is an adjunct faculty member of Springfield College School of Human Services Wilmington, Delaware campus. He will be the instructor for the course "Economics of Change." Mr. Smith spent the first 18 years of his professional career working in higher education and has been involved in public management for the past 20 years. Henry currently serves as Cabinet Secretary for Delaware's Department of Services for Children, Youth, and Their Families also known as The Children's Department. The Children's Department has an operating budget of $175 million and provides mental, behavioral, and substance abuse services to children who had been abused, neglected or abandoned. Mr. Smith routinely teaches courses in fiscal management and strategic planning and has also taught courses in economics of change, organizational behavior and leadership. His undergraduate studies were completed at Union College in Schenectady, New York, and his Master's and Ph.D. studies were completed at the University of Delaware. Henry Smith III


Joan Mikalson, Ed.D.

Joan teaches in both the undergraduate and graduate programs in the School of Human Services. She will be the instructor for the course entitled: "Research Project I." Her professional interests include community-based action research, nonprofit organization development, and the design and delivery of adult learning systems. She is a board member and membership chair of the New England Organization of Human Services, a restorative justice volunteer on the Community Accountability Board of the Hampden County Sheriff's Department and Correctional Center, and a program evaluator with the Council for Standards in Human Services Education. Joan serves on the Springfield College Institutional Review Board, the SHS Graduate Admissions team, and routinely presents at college and professional conferences. Joan Mikalson, Ed.D.


James Morton

James Morton is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA of Greater Springfield, which is one of the largest providers of childcare, before and after school programming, housing, and wellness programs in Western Massachusetts. He will be the instructor for the course entitled: "Planning and Implementation." Previously, Morton served as the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Career Development Institute, Inc. (MCDI), where he restored MCDI’s reputation for quality programming, fiscal discipline, and advocacy for those in need of employment, housing, and literacy services. Prior to MCDI, Morton was a law and history teacher at the High School of Commerce and was a practicing attorney for more than 18 years. Morton is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and Northeastern University School of Law. Jim Morton
