Message From the Chair

Welcome!

Beth Boyle I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on becoming a member of the Springfield College family. My name is Bethany Boyle and I am from Springfield, Mass. I am a psychology major who will be graduating in the spring of 2012. This summer, I am working on campus with the Summer Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program as well as holding down two part-time jobs in the city.

This year, I have the privilege of being the general chair of New Student Orientation. New Student Orientation, also known as NSO, is a four-day program that allows you to become familiar with the campus and your peers. NSO begins the process of engaging you with academic, residential, and social aspects of Springfield College. The NSO Executive Board and I have been working hard to develop a program that will get you off to a great start here at Springfield College.

There are many aspects to our College that help to make it a great experience: coursework, residence halls, peers, upper-class students, co-curricular activities, faculty, traditions, the surrounding community, and more. NSO is designed to engage you with our school, but we need your enthusiasm, cooperation, and involvement in order to be successful.

During the four days of NSO, you will be in a group of approximately 24 students, with both a male and a female leader. Your NSO leader will contact you over the summer by telephone, letter, e-mail, or through Facebook.

Springfield College is strong on tradition, and one of the oldest traditions is New Student Orientation. This program is unique, as it will allow you to take part in many activities and give you the opportunity to meet fellow classmates, faculty, and staff. Our NSO leaders work hard year-round to develop, implement, and provide the best possible orientation program. They are enthusiastic about the program, meeting you, and helping you adjust to your new environment.

Some of the highlights of NSO are:
Upon arrival on Friday, Sept. 2, students check in for orientation and into their residence halls. Please note that check in for New Student Orientation on September 2 is between 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Students and their families are invited to the New Student Assembly at Blake Arena.

Group Leaders
Terry Vecchio, advisor; Nick Chirekos, head transfer leader; Zach O'Leary, head assistant leader; Bethany Boyle, general chair; Stacey Rose, advisor; Kelly Sweeney, head women's leader; Brian Sniffin, head men's leader; Sean Seifert, head programmer; Tom St. John, advisor. (Not in photo: Anne Goodeve, advisor.)

At the conclusion of the assembly, students join their classmates and NSO leaders and begin familiarizing themselves with the College, its traditions, and the many aspects of campus life. Some of this time will be spent at Springfield College’s East Campus, a “nature zone” a mile-and-a-half from the main campus.

Students will discuss the summer reading selection, Outcasts United by Warren St. John, with faculty, staff, and NSO leaders

Please take some time to review the NSO Web pages in order to familiarize yourself with the dates and times of arrival. We also ask that you familiarize yourself with both the traditions and songs prior to your arrival at Springfield College.

I look forward to meeting you during the New Student Orientation. Again, welcome to the Springfield College family!

Sincerely,
Bethany Boyle ‘12
General Chair of New Student Orientation 2011
