Advocacy Internship working on projects related to macro policy change at

Program will place 28 college graduates as AmeriCorps members in participating
legal services organizations throughout Massachusetts. Members will work under
professional supervision in providing legal assistance to low-income people in
civil (non-criminal) matters. Members will be exposed to a wide range of legal
assistance activities beginning with initial client contact and eligibility
determinations, to case development, negotiation, hearing and appeal. Civil law
areas commonly practiced in participating legal services organizations include

Income Maintenance and Health Benefits; Legal Problems of Elders; Immigration;

The Crittenton Women’s Union transforms the course of low-income women’s lives
so that they can attain economic independence and create better futures for
themselves and their families. Research and Innovation is dedicated to
understanding what it takes to reach economic self-sufficiency, and using that
knowledge to inform program design and social change. Research and Innovation
works directly with our clients and direct-care staff to conduct qualitative and
quantitative research studies to learn more about the clients we serve, research
and benchmark best practices, analyze policies, formulate and launch new
programs, and develop and analyze outcomes. This is a great opportunity for
someone to learn how to apply research skills in a community based setting and
receive guidance and mentoring from senior researchers.
We have several projects that we are currently recruiting for. They include: A field work based qualitative study of how low income families make decisions
around work and social supports, specifically analyzing the effects of social
support eligibility requirements and client progress toward self-sufficiency. Developing a series of Fact Sheets based on academic research and data
analysis on topics relevant to low income and homeless families on issues such
as, education, housing, poverty rates and obstacles to self-sufficiency. Workforce research on careers for women with pathways to self-sufficiency. Program evaluation research on CWU’s housing, family support, and domestic
violence programs toward creating best practices.
Depending on the project, students may be researching and analyzing best
practices, conducting qualitative or quantitative field research with clients
(which may include surveys, assessments, focus groups, and/or interviews),
analyzing economic data, synthesizing reports, conducting independent research,
evaluating outcomes, recommending program strategies or policy directions,
and/or writing reports.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
experience and/or coursework in one or more of the following: Public policy,
workforce development, human services, economics, psychology, anthropology,
sociology, organizational development; coursework in qualitative and /or quantitative research methods and statistics;
interest in issues around low income families;
