SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE RECEIVES 'AWARD OF MERIT' JOSTENS/NADIIIAA's TOP COMMUNITY SERVICE HONOR  Springfield College has received the highly-coveted Jostens/NADIIIAA Community Service Top "Award of Merit" for projects completed during the 2006-07 academic year. The College was presented the Jostens/NADIIIAA highest Award of Merit in the "Array of Projects/Activities" category on January 14, 2008, at the NCAA Convention in Nashville. Read more.

JAMES NAISMITH COURT RECOGNIZED BY NCAA NEWS The NCAA News began its new on-line version of its publication on January 7, 2008. The lead item on the front page of its first on-line edition was the following article concerning the re-naming of Springfield College's basketball court, James Naismith Court, on November 30, 2007.

HARRY ROCK NAMED DIRECTOR, YMCA RELATIONS Springfield College has appointed Harry F. Rock of Westfield, Mass., as its director of YMCA relations, effective Feb. 1, 2008.  Rock will have senior staff responsibilities for managing and expanding the College's partnership with the YMCA of the USA and its programs and supporting services for students preparing for YMCA careers.  Read more.

TEAMS RAISE FUNDS TOWARD KRESGE CHALLENGE Members of the men's basketball and the women's gymnastics teams recently helped out in the Office of Development. On January 7 and 9, team members, coaches, and assistant coaches joined Laraine Robison G'99, associate director of the annual fund, and Bonnie Cox G'88, director of the annual fund, in their Phonathon efforts. The volunteers made phone calls to alumni from the basketball and gymnastics teams with the goal of raising funds as well as increasing donor participation in support of the College's Leadership for the 21st Century campaign and The Kresge Challenge.

ALUMNI PHONATHONS HIT THE ROAD  Springfield College has kicked off the New Year by taking its Annual Fund Phonathon on the road. Alumni can help raise funds toward The Kresge Challenge and encourage support of Leadership for the 21st Century: The Campaign for Springfield College. More than $35.5 million has been committed thus far, with an additional $4 million that must be raised by June 30, 2008, in order to secure the $1 million Kresge Challenge grant. CREAN LEADS THE WAY AS MEN'S BASKETBALL TOPPLES MONTCLAIR STATE, 75-64, FOR HOLIDAY INN/NAISMITH CLASSIC CROWN Sophomore Pat Crean (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) continued his impressive play as of late with a 21-point effort to lead the Springfield College men's basketball team to a 75-64 win over Montclair State University in the championship game of the Holiday Inn/Naismith Classic on Friday evening.  Crean was joined by teammate Gregg Daly on the All-Tournament team.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL OPENS UP NEWMAC PLAY WITH 79-51 WIN AT WELLESLEY The Springfield College women's basketball team used tenacious defense and a spread out offensive attack to cruise to a 79-51 win at Wellesley on Wednesday evening. It was the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference opener for both teams.  Tara McCarthy led the way for the Pride with 14 points, while the Pride's bench had its finest game of the season as a unit, scoring 30 of the team's 79 points.

SWIMMING AND DIVING CRUISES PAST UNION AND HARTWICK The Springfield College men's and women's swimming and diving teams cruised past Hartwick and Union on Saturday afternoon.  On the men's side, Ben Casavant (3m board) and Roy Burch (50m) each reached NCAA qualifying marks. Read more.

WRESTLING PLACES 8TH (OF 20) AT THE BUDD WHITEHILL DUALS The Springfield College wrestling team placed eighth (of 20 teams) in the Budd Whitehill Duals in Lycoming, Pa., Jan. 11 and 12.  The Pride picked up wins over No. 10 Ithaca, Case Western, and Baldwin Wallace and fell to No. 20 UW-Whitewater, No. 14 York, and No. 9 TCNJ.  After six total bouts, Springfield finished 3-3, making it 4-5 in duals to this point of the season.

SPRINGFIELD FINISHES 4TH OF 6 IN OPENING MEET OF 2008 AT BLAKE ARENA; SOUTHERN CONN FINISHES FIRST, YALE SECOND Ericca Castagna placed second (9.500) on the vault to lead the Springfield College women's gymnastics team to a fourth-place finish Jan. 13.  SCSU went on to capture the six-team meet while Yale finished second.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL EARNS NO. 1 PRESEASON RANKING IN CSTV/AVCA DIVISION III MEN'S TOP 15 COACHES POLL The Springfield College men's volleyball team enters the 2008 campaign with high hopes for a successful season under head coach Charlie Sullivan. Looking to make a run at their fifth national championship, many feel the Pride may be the top team in Division III this season as it recently was awarded the top spot in the 2008 Preseason CSTV/AVCA Division III Men's Top 15 Coaches Poll.
