CREATION OF SCHOLARSHIP FUND BRINGS PRIDE TO ALUMNUS
The Air Medal he was awarded for combat missions flown over Japan at the height of WWII might begin the list. A stellar career as recreation manager for the towns of Farmington, Connecticut, and Watertown, Massachusetts, might follow. But almost nothing in Larry Fortier’s life makes him as proud as the Larry and Isabelle Fortier Scholarship Fund he established at Springfield College this year. Read more.

SCHOOL OF HUMAN SERVICES MANCHESTER CAMPUS PARTNERS WITH NEW HAMPSHIRE-VERMONT ALLIANCE OF YMCAs
The New Hampshire-Vermont Alliance of YMCAs has designated the Springfield College School of Human Services (SHS) Manchester Campus as its institution of choice for bachelor’s and master’s degrees for its personnel. Read more.
HOUSTON CAMPUS TO OPEN IN PARTNERSHIP WITH YMCA OF GREATER HOUSTON
Springfield College and the YMCA of Greater Houston have formed a new partnership to establish the 11th campus of the college’s School of Human Services in Houston. Classes at the new Houston campus will begin in Sept. 2008 at the YMCA of Greater Houston’s William V. Phillips Center for Leadership Development, located at 2122 East Governors Circle. Read more.
SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK TO HOLD INFORMATION SESSION FOR PROSPECTIVE GRAD STUDENTS
The Springfield College School of Social Work will present an information session for prospective graduate students on Thursday March 6, 2008, from 4 to 6 p.m., at its facilities at the Brennan Center, 45 Island Pond Road, Springfield. Read more.
ARTS PROGRAMS PRESENTED
Springfield College’s winter/spring series of visual and performing arts programs open to the public will feature fine art exhibitions by noted local artists and art students, theatrical performances by professionals and students, a film festival, and concerts by professional musicians. MEN'S VOLLEYBALL HANDLES NEW HAVEN, 3-0
For the second time in five days, the Springfield College men’s volleyball team cruised past New Haven in three games Feb. 19. Winning by the scores of 30-26, 30-25, 30-17, the Pride were led by junior All-American Ryan Fredrickson’s game-high 15 kills. Freshman Cal Palumbo added nine kills and five blocks as he hit a perfect 1.000. Read more.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD COMPETES IN TUFTS INVITATIONAL
The Springfield College men's indoor track and field team competed in a non-scoring meet in Medford Feb. 16-17 at Tufts. The Pride had a trio of outstanding performances as Steve Headley tied the all-time school record in the 55-meter dash for the Pride with his time of 6.42. In the 800-meter run, Mike Griffin qualified for nationals with a time of 1:54.54, while Mike Miller also qualified for nationals after he won the high jump with a height of 6-7. Read more.
WOMEN'S TRACK PERFORMS WELL AT TUFTS INVITATIONAL
Steph Colella competed in all five events of the pentathlon and improved her previous best point total from 2,364 points to 2,782 points, thus qualifying for Division III New Englands and ECAC Div. III Championships. The pentathlon includes 55 meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump, and the 800 meter. Katie Ward also qualified for Div. III New Englands and ECAC Championships in 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 42' 6.25," while teammate Kelsey Bishop finished third in the event with a toss of 47'6.5". Read more.
MEN'S BASKETBALL DISPATCHES WHEATON WITH LATE FLURRY, 74-60
Gregg Daly scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the men’s basketball team to a 74-60 victory over Wheaton College Feb. 16 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference contest at James Naismith Court at Blake Arena. With the win, Springfield raised its record to 10-12 overall, 5-5 in the NEWMAC. For Springfield College Head Coach Charlie Brock, it was victory #150 in this his 10th year at SC. He owns 379 victories in this his 27th year coaching overall. Read more.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HOLDS OFF CLARK, 79-64, ON THINK PINK DAY
Tara McCarthy poured in a game-high 24 points to pace the women's basketball team to a 79-64 win over visiting Clark in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference action on Feb. 16 in Blake Arena. With the win, the Pride now stands at 13-9, 8-3 in league play and are in third place in the league. With her 24 points, McCarthy moved into fourth place on the women's basketball all-time scoring list. To date, McCarthy has netted 1,316 points in her career at Springfield, as she passed Sharon Playdon (1981-1984), who tallied 1,313 points in her career. Read more.
MEN'S GYMNASTICS FINISHES SECOND AT TEMPLE
Paced by several outstanding individual efforts, the Springfield College men's gymnastics team finished in second place at a tri-meet hosted by Temple University on Feb. 16. Temple claimed first place in the tri-meet with a score of 339.450, while the Springfield men placed second in a score of 329.600. MIT rounded out the meet with a mark of 311.800. Freshman Josh Fox finished second in the all-around with a score of 80.500, while teammate Matt Bolognese registered a mark of 14.950 on the still rings, which was good enough for first place. WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS TOPPLES RIC, 181.675 to 165.325
Sophomore Alexandra Ploenes captured the all-around competition and placed first on the balance beam as she led the women’s gymnastics team to victory in a dual meet with Rhode Island College in Blake Arena. The Pride saw many members of its team step up as Springfield College finished with at least the top three in every event. A different member of the team took first place in each of this afternoon’s events, as Jacqui Mazzola won the top spot on the vault, Ashley Moreck took the uneven parallel bars, and Kayleigh Davis was victorious on the floor exercise. WRESTLING TOPS TRINITY AND PLYMOUTH STATE; PICKS UP WIN NO. 900
The wrestling team defeated Plymouth State and Trinity on Feb. 16 in a quadrangular meet hosted by Trinity College, and in doing so became the fourth school in NCAA history to earn 900 victories. The Pride now joins Oklahoma State, Iowa State, and Oregon State as the only schools to have achieved this milestone. Number 900 came against Plymouth State as the Pride won by a score of 31-18. Springfield then followed that up by picking up win 901 in impressive fashion, cruising past Trinity, 37-4. Read more.
