Academic and Cultural Experiences at the Tianjin University of Sport

LectureHello again and welcome back to the journal. Today started with breakfast in the hotel lobby that included both American and Chinese cuisine buffet style. The restaurant layout was interesting with several private booths in small rooms, each seating 4-6 people. After breakfast we left for the main campus of the Tianjin University of Sport for lectures by our faculty. These lectures were attended by all of our students and students and faculty from the University. Dr. Guyer and I presented on similar topics to our last lecture with interpretation from Dr. Wong, who visited SC about a month ago with the delegation from Tianjin University of sport.

AcupunctureAfter the lecture we were treated to a tour of the massage / acupuncture teaching room. During this time there was a class going on, so we were able to see how the students here learn. We were offered massages and acupuncture treatments, and some delegates accepted the offer. It sounds like the practitioners were excellent at their trade! We were also asking a lot of questions about treatment styles for athletic injuries and overall wellness. The professor was very gracious with his time and knowledge, we all learned a lot.

Next we were given a tour of the exercise physiology lab, the biochemistry lab, the molecular physiology lab, and the cell culture lab. This was a nice facility that allows the faculty to perform cutting edge research that happens to be directly in line with our interests. Seeing this made us all even more excited for the new facilities that are nearing completion on the SC campus. In the fall we will have brand new, state of the art athletic training and exercise science labs and classrooms. This is an exciting time at SC, for more information please see our home page at www.springfieldcollege.edu.

ShoppingAfter the tour we left for lunch at the hotel that included fish, vegetables, rice, and a non-potent frozen watermelon drink. We had a short break after lunch, then left for a shopping trip in Tianjin. This is a nice city that is buzzing with excitement for the upcoming Olympic games. Tianjin is located about 90 minutes (by car) from Beijing, and will be the site for the soccer games. Though there is a lot of construction under way, the city is clean and modern looking. The weather has been great with low humidity and lots of sunshine, temperatures in the upper 70’s. During the shopping trip we were chaperoned by students from the University who knew the shops well. I would also like to give special thanks to Mrs. Liu, who has tremendous bargaining skills at these shops. Most likely she has helped your favorite delegate get a great deal on souvenirs for family and friends – thanks Mrs. Liu!

DinnerAfter shopping we met the President for dinner again. It was a nice relaxed atmosphere with good food. For me a highlight was the President expressing how grateful he was for the hospitality shown to him at SC during his recent visit. He expressed a great interest in growing our collaboration and friendship. He is an excellent host who engaged our students and faculty throughout the meal.

We are now back at the hotel to pack our things for our trip to Beijing tomorrow. Packing is becoming more difficult with each stop because of the shopping and generous gifts given at each school. We are off to rest now, have a great day and enjoy your weekend.
