Full day tour of Wuhan

Welcome back to the short-term study abroad journal from China. This morning we ate breakfast together in the hotel lobby and had some American favorites including hard boiled eggs, pancakes, and (best of all) coffee! Coffee is not nearly as popular here in China, which has been especially challenging for many of us. In Hong Kong there was a Starbucks near our hotel, but since then finding coffee has been difficult. On a personal note I have not had a cup of coffee in five days, so this morning was pure bliss!

TombAfter breakfast we boarded the bus and left for the Hubei Provincial Museum. On the way we passed East Lake, which is the largest lake in China. Once at the museum we spent about 2 hours touring the amazing exhibits. The highlights included the hall of Tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng, hall of Yunxian Man, and the hall of Qujialing.

ArtifactThe Tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng was very impressive. The tomb is located at Leigudun, which is in the suburbs of Suizhou in the province of Hubei (where we are staying now). The tomb was excavated in 1978, and is the tomb of a feudal King buried 2,400 years ago! The materials were unbelievable. There were weapons, armor, eating utensils, and jewelry. To think that people made these items more than two thousand years ago is pretty amazing.

MusicAfter viewing the exhibits we attended a musical performance where the musicians played ancient wind, percussion, and string instruments. They were dressed in some beautiful clothing. There was also dancing to accompany some of the songs.

After the performance we left the museum for lunch. We ate at the Wuhan Kang-Long-Tai-Zi restaurant where we dined on Peking duck, cucumbers, pork ribs, and three different soups. The food here in Wuhan is also excellent, but we have noticed that it is considerably more spicy than the food in the previous cities.

Group at TowerAfter lunch we went to the Yellow Crane Tower, which is the picture you see next to the short text today. This was a very impressive building. The entry to the Tower included a nice lake and statues. There were also a number of shops that we browsed on our way out. There were several flights of stairs to the top of the Tower. The view was great despite the cloudy day with intermittent rain.

In the late afternoon we had a 2 hour break where many of us rested and / or did some exercise. This is a creative group when it comes to exercise. We have run stairs, used hotel room furniture as weights, and worked out on playgrounds! This SC crew is true to it’s roots in Spirit, Mind, and Body!

After the rest it was time for a treat – pizza in China! That’s right, we ate American tonight. Our guide, Dr. Pei Xu spent some time studying in the U.S., and has a friend here in Wuhan who owns an Italian restaurant. We ate brick oven pizza and used napkins (which are almost never provided in the restaurants) as well as forks and knives. The entire delegation enjoyed this treat along with great conversation and reflections of the trip so far. I hope you are enjoying the journal and have a great short work week. Off to bed to prepare for a day of academics tomorrow.
