Academic Success Center F.A.Q.s

Q: Who uses the Academic Success Center?

A: The Academic Success Center is for all Springfield College students who want to improve their academic skills and performance.

Q: Where is the Academic Success Center located?

A: The Academic Success Center is located in the Hickory Hall, Room 109. Our telephone number is 748-3747.

Q: What kind of academic support is available?

A: The Academic Success Center provides a variety of academic support services that are described here: Services of the Academic Success Center.

Q: What is Academic Coaching?

A: Students may benefit from working one-on-one with an Academic Coach. Academic Coaches are available to help students address problems that impede academic success such as procrastination, time management, study skills and related issues.

Q: How do I request a tutor?

A: Tutoring services are also available for most subject areas. We strongly advise students to get their tutor requests in as early as possible. Just fill out a Tutor Request form, which are available in the Academic Success Center here: Request a Tutor.

Q: How much do these services cost?

A: All academic support services are free.

Q: How do I become a tutor?

A: If students are interested in being a tutor for Writing Support Services, Math Support Services or other academic areas, they should:
  1. Go to the Academic Success Room (Hickory 109) and fill out a Tutor Application packet.
  2. All tutors must be faculty approved. If you would like to tutor you should contact the professor you had for that subject and ask them to recommend you as a tutor. The staff at the Academic Success Center will check with your professor(s). Tutor candidates are expected to have had an A- or better in the course related to the intended academic area. At times, a grade of B+ or higher has been accepted.
  3. Students who are Work Study Eligible are given first consideration for hiring.
  4. If students meet these criteria and are hired, they will be contacted by the Graduate Assistant Tutor Manager for the Academic Success Center and scheduled for formal tutor training.
  5. Once hired, students will need to go to the Office of Human Resources to fill out a W-2 form if they have not done so already.

Q: I’ve been placed on academic probation/warning what do I need to do?

A: All students that have been placed on probation or warning are required to meet weekly with an Academic Coach and monthly with the Director of Learning Support Services. The primary goal of these meetings is to provide assistance and support for the student so they can improve their academic skills and performance.
