"LEADERSHIP HAS TO BE FOR A GOOD PURPOSE" STUART REESE TELLS GRADS
"Leadership is serving people in such a way that they choose to follow you with the result of improvement in human condition," Stuart H. Reese, chairman, president and chief executive officer of MassMutual, told graduates of Springfield College’s bachelor’s degree programs May 18, at the College’s 122nd Commencement, at the MassMutual Center, in Springfield, Mass. "Go ahead and try things, whether you know that you can do them or not. Remember, as you build your stories through your experiences, that the sweet is sweeter for the bitter, even though it may not be until we get to that sweeter side to appreciate that. Go for it with the knowledge that you are prepared. And, embrace your future knowing: yes, you can; yes, you can; yes, you can," Dr. Tenley E. BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTS GRIGGS, BLAKE, COUPE AS OFFICERS
The Springfield College Board of Trustees elected Sally M. Griggs, of Northampton, Mass., as chair, and Douglass L. Coupe, of Bluffton, S.C., as secretary, at its annual meeting, May 16, on the campus. Helen Davis Blake, of Somers, Conn., and Stuart, Fla., was reelected vice chair. Read more.
WILLIAMS NAMED DIRECTOR, HOUSTON CAMPUS, SCHOOL OF HUMAN SERVICES
Isaac W. Williams, Jr., of Porter, Texas, has been named campus director and assistant dean of the Houston campus of the Springfield College School of Human Services. Read more.
A new agreement between the Springfield College School of Human Services (SHS) and Health Communications, Inc., parent company of U.S. Journal Training and "Counselor, The Magazine for Addiction Professionals," will allow persons training through HCI for careers as mental health and addiction services professionals throughout the United States to receive academic credit toward their bachelor’s degrees at SHS. CITY COUNCIL PROCLAMATION HONORS COLLEGE FOR HELPING WORKERS PURCHASE HOMES IN STATE STREET AREA
The Springfield City Council issued a proclamation at its April 28 meeting commending Springfield College, along with American International College, Baystate Health, and MassMutual, for offering subsidies to their employees who become first-time home buyers in a new program that also qualifies them for state matching funds. Top NCAA coaches Roy Williams, Billy Donovan, John Thompson III, and Tara VanDerveer are just a few of the well-known college basketball coaches who conducted sessions at the Nike Championship Basketball Clinic at the James Naismith Court at Springfield College’s Blake Arena. Read more.

SOFTBALL WINS THREE GAMES IN FINAL DAY TO CAPTURE NEWMAC CROWN
With a 2-1 extra innings win over defending champion,Wellesley College, the Springfield Pride won the 2008 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Softball Championship. Springfield, coming from the consolation bracket, needed a 2-1 win over Wellesley to force the deciding game. Read more.
BASEBALL FALLS TO WHEATON, 4-1, IN NEWMAC TITLE GAME
Luke Gabordi was one of four Pride players with one hit, as he drove in his team's only run and walked twice as the Pride fell in the NEWMAC Championship Game to Wheaton. Jacob Feist allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings, striking out one and walking two, just one day after earning the save to key Springfield's upset over number-one Babson College. Read more.
FOUR MEMBERS OF THE WOMEN'S LACROSSE TEAM GARNER ALL-CONFERENCE ACCOLADES
The Springfield College women's lacrosse team had four players named to the NEWMAC All-Conference team. Alexandra Bazzano, Rachel Lampros, and Meghan Wissel were selected to the NEWMAC First Team, while teammate Meagan Dobson was a second team selection. Read more.
BEEBE'S CAREER-NIGHT POWERS MEN'S LACROSSE PAST KEAN, 17-2, IN NCAA TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND
Junior Jake Beebe powered the Springfield College men’s lacrosse team to a 17-2 win over the visiting Kean University Cougars in the first round of the 2008 Division III Men’s Lacrosse Tournament. Beebe, who notched five goals and five assists for 10 points in the contest, was one off the NCAA Division III Tournament record for points in a game. Read more.
HEADLEY FINISHES FOURTH IN 100 METER DASH IN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Steve Headley completed his sensational sophomore year at Springfield College by finishing fourth in the 100 meter dash at the NCAA Championships. In earning All-American honors, Headley finished the race in a time of 10.75. He previously qualified with the second fastest time of the prelims with a mark of 10.59. Read more.
HAY PLACES THIRD IN TRIPLE JUMP AT NCAA OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
Nikki Hay wrapped up her sophomore campaign in impressive fashion as she finished third in the triple jump at the NCAA Championships. Hay was sensational as she recorded a jump of 11.98 meters, or 39-3 3/4, a Springfield College record. Her best mark came on her second to last jump, and for her efforts, Hay was once again named an All-American. Read more.
TRIO NAMED TO "ESPN THE MAGAZINE" ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA TEAM
Two student-athletes from the baseball team along with one from the softball team were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors Association of America (CoSIDA). Justin Nussey and Jimmy Lisowski were named to the 2008 Academic All-America District I Second Team in the college division, while Bryn Worrilow was named to the 2008 Academic All-America District I Third Team in the college division.
