The Pride Awards 2008

Pride Awards Logo In 2008, the PRIDE Awards Ceremony was launched by the Division of Student Affairs to recognize Springfield College students who have demonstrated their commitment to leadership in service to humanity—both on campus and in the wider community. With the exception of the Student Organization of the Year Award and Advisor of the Year Award, nominations for awards are solicited campus-wide, and a committee made up of students, faculty, and staff select the top nominees and the recipient of each award.

Welcome

  • Meaghan Roy - Health Educator
Opening Remarks
  • David Braverman - Vice President of Student Affairs

Outstanding Graduate Student
The Outstanding Graduate award recognizes a graduate student who has made significant contributions to the betterment of the campus and the community, and who has focused on change or improvement of conditions for those beyond the immediate community.

Student Organization of the Year Award
The Student Organization of the Year Award is given by the Student Government Association (SGA) to a recognized student organization for outstanding service to the campus community through programs, workshops, and other opportunities for involvement. The recipient is selected by the SGA Executive Board.

Advisor of the Year Award
The Advisor of the Year award is given by the Student Government Association (SGA) to the advisor of a recognized student organization. The award honors outstanding service by the advisor to that student organization. Nominations are provided by individual student organizations, and the recipient is selected by the SGA Executive Board.

Diane Potter Prize
The Diane Potter Prize recognizes an outstanding sophomore physical education major for accomplishments inside and outside the classroom. The recipient must maintain a GPA of 3.0, be a physical education teacher preparation student, show promise within the teaching profession, and complete the physical education awards candidate information form.

Class of ’57 Leadership Chair
The Class of ’57 Leadership Chair, established in 2002 from the generous contributions of members of the Class of 1957, is given to a graduating senior who exemplifies leadership and embodies the spirit-mind-body philosophy throughout all aspects of his or her life.

Spirit Award
The Spirit Award is presented annually to a graduate or undergraduate student who, while at Springfield College, has made a significant contribution to the spiritual life of the campus or to the surrounding community through co-curricular efforts and activities. The recipient of this award demonstrates an enduring commitment to the wholeness of the campus and community neighbors; works to foster hope, meaning, and transformation in the communities served; and exemplifies the College’s commitment to educating ethical, reflective, and socially engaged leaders and change agents.
Mind Award
The Mind Award is presented annually to a graduate or undergraduate student who, while at Springfield College, has made significant contributions to the intellectual and cultural environment of the College and to the surrounding community through co-curricular work. The recipient of this award fosters curiosity and discovery among students, faculty, and staff, and critical engagement with and respectful discussion of the issues and ideas that define the world in which we live and serve. The Mind Award recipient exemplifies the College’s commitment to educating leaders who are critical, creative, and culturally engaged thinkers whose education is always in service to humanity.

Body Award
The Body Award is presented annually to a graduate or undergraduate student who, while at Springfield College, has made an extraordinary contribution to improving the health and physical well-being of individuals at the College or in the surrounding community through co-curricular and extracurricular efforts. The recipient demonstrates the valuable impact that individuals can make in changing the places, organizations, and systems that touch the lives of people, whether at work or at play, and exemplifies the College’s commitment to overall wellness and constructive, cooperative community engagement.

Unsung Hero Award
The Unsung Hero Award honors an individual who has worked tirelessly to make an impact on the campus and on community life, working behind the scenes—often without recognition—to provide leadership in service to humanity.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Award
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Award recognizes a student who best typifies Dr. King’s moral legacy, which transcended racial and national boundaries. King’s campaign—the Poor People’s March on Washington, which he did not live to complete—symbolized his political dream for a United States where blacks, whites, Indians, Asians, Latinos, and others could live together as brothers and sisters, equal under the law and with an economic bill of rights that would guarantee a job or income for all.

Humanics Leader in Service Award
The Humanics Leader in Service Award honors a student who has consistently committed to serving humanity and working towards the pursuit of social justice in society, and who has made lifestyle and career decisions consistent with the values gained from community service experiences.
