For Parents of First-Year Students
During their first year of college, students will be involved both formally and informally in assessing their skills, interests, and strengths. They will do this through taking introductory courses, being involved in activities on the campus and within the community, having discussions with their friends and faculty, and generally being exposed to and trying out different ideas and experiences. Most students enter college with very limited awareness of the wide array of courses, majors, and careers available to them. Even those with a career plan may find themselves drawn to new options once they begin to learn about the many possibilities available. This is an exciting time for students!
What you can do to help:
- Support your student’s exploration of new areas of study and interests. This, after all, is what education is all about!
- Affirm what you know to be areas of skill and ability he or she has consistently demonstrated. Students don’t always recognize them.
- Talk with your student about the courses and activities he or she is enjoying and the importance of balancing studies with social activities. Your willingness to listen will keep you in the loop.
- Encourage your student to get involved in campus clubs and activities, or community service opportunities.
- Urge your child to visit the Career Center for assistance.
Recommendations for students from the Career Center:
- Develop a relationship with their faculty advisor, other faculty and administrators on campus who can assist them in adjusting to college life and academic expectations.
- Talk with their roommate and friends about their college experience and career interests; begin to build a support network.
- Attend the Majors Fair and learn from the faculty about academic majors, minors, and required coursework.
- Meet with a counselor in the Career Center who works specifically with their major, or who can help them explore interests, values, and skills to link into careers and majors.
- Start to view college as preparation for life: get involved in activities, attend the Club Fair to learn about campus organizations, and look for an on-campus job.

The Career Center is an important link in partnering with parents to effectively assist students as they manage their career planning process. Studies have shown that many parents recognize the significant influence they have in their student’s career decision making, yet are often reluctant to actively participate in the career exploration and planning process. Our aim is to work with parents during their student’s college years with the shared goal of providing students with guidance and resources throughout the career decisionmaking process.
