    Dr. William M. Susman: The Value of Preventive Health

    Dr. William M. Susman, dean of the School of Health Sciences and Rehabilitation Studies, gave a presentation entitled The Value of Preventive Health at the Affiliated Chambers of Commerce of Greater Springfield monthly Breakfast Club meeting at Western New England College on June 6. This meeting was the first time that faculty and administrators from area colleges were invited by the chamber to make presentations. Three other colleges were also represented. Dr. Susman spoke about the incidence of obesity, the cost to employers of obesity and related illnesses, and what businesses can do to help employees with this common and threatening clinical problem.

    Assistant Professor of Emergency Medical Services

    In the wake of the rescue of a lost Boy Scout in N.C., WGGB-TV interviewed Jude Moore, chair of the Emergency Medical Services Management Department, and an expert on search and rescue. Moore offered tips on what to do if lost in the woods, and advice that parents should give to children. Read more.

    AMA President-Elect at Springfield College

    Dr. Ronald M. Davis, president-elect of the American Medical Association, spoke to Springfield College students who were preparing for careers in health and medicine. Because of his wide-ranging experience in medicine and population health, Dr. Davis is an authority on such issues as tobacco use, obesity, media violence, and dietary supplements. Dr. Davis focused his presentation on “The Crisis in Primary Health Care and the Role of Preventive Health.”

    This event was planned through the auspices of the Hampden District Medical Society and the School of Health Sciences and Rehabilitation Studies. Read more.

    Faculty Accomplishment

    Regina Kaufman, associate professor in the Physical Therapy Department, recently received a Doctor of Education degree in the Program in Educational Policy, Research, and Administration at the University of Massachusetts. Read more.

    HSRS Grad Featured in the Connecticut Valley Spectator

    Abby Breen, who received her master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling and Services from Springfield College in 2006, was featured in the Connecticut Valley Spectator. Breen is now working as a student assistance program counselor for the state-funded nonprofit Health Care and Rehabilitative Services of southeastern Vermont.
