Game-Day Security Research Update

Kathryn Hart Certificate Graduate students Meghan McTear (L) and Kathryn Hart (R) joined Dr. Matthew Pantera at the Southern Mississippi and Homeland Security Stadium workshop.
“Worldstadium.com counts 1,804 sports facilities across the USA, in big cities and small towns, holding hundreds to more than 100,000 spectators” (USA Today, Brady 2009). Research teams from the Sport Management and Recreation Department at Springfield College, MA have continued to monitor game-day security practices since their groundbreaking research contributions in 2003.

This past summer, graduate students Meghan McTear and Kathryn Hart along with their Professor and Department Chair Matthew Pantera, successfully completed the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security Course. The University of Southern Mississippi and the Department of Homeland Security administered the two-day course, located at Gillette Stadium, in Foxborough Mass. The content centered on standardization of sport-event risk management practices at NCAA Division I, II, and III intercollegiate athletic events (Southern Mississippi, 2009).

The second phase of Springfield College's game-day security research will be forthcoming in an article written by the newly certified students and their professor in the coming months. The above-mentioned experiences represent Springfield College’s continued efforts to provide authentic learning opportunities for graduate students.
