Authorized Driver Training Course

Scheduled Dates for the 2008 Spring Semester

Come one come all – the course is for students, faculty, and staff.
Do you need to drive a vehicle for the college?  Do you want to possibly save money on your car insurance?  If you answered yes to either question then you need to attend an SC Defensive Driver Course.

The defensive driver course is the first step in getting certified to drive a college owned, rented, or leased vehicle.  The course is also an added step to improving your driving skills by reawakening your awareness to driving safely.

The course is taught in a classroom setting (don’t worry, no driving road tests).  The course will be held in Moses Hall at the BC.  Please plan ahead.  The dates and times listed below will be the only courses offered this semester.

  • February 7th 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM
  • March 3rd 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM

To sign-up to attend a Defensive Driving Course you need to send an email to Transportation@spfldcol.edu  Title the e-mail DDC Sign-up.  Contain in body of the e-mail: your full name, a contact phone #, the date of the course you plan to attend and the name of the department you plan on driving for.   Prior to attending the course a currant copy of your driver history needs to be on file at the SC Department of Public Safety.

How to get authorized to drive for the college

In order to drive a college rented, leased or owned vehicle; drivers must meet the following criteria:

  1. Drivers must be at least 20 years of age and have possessed a driver’s license for a minimum of 3 years.
  2. A currant driver history must be on file at the SC Department of Public Safety (perspective drivers must submit an authorization to conduct a driver history query).
  3. Drivers must maintain a good driver history (as determined by the driver history query).
  4. Drivers must complete a one time 4 hour defensive driver training course administered by Springfield College Department of Public Safety (course schedule listed above).

All persons seeking to be authorized to drive for the college are responsible for obtaining their own driver history. The SC Department of Public Safety can assist in obtaining your record; however there are states which do not cooperate with a timely return of records. They are: CT, NJ, PA, MD, IL, and HI. These states can take from 2 to 6 weeks to return a query.  If you are from one of these states and you can not wait for the state to respond to the query, you’ll have to obtain a copy of your history yourself.  You can obtain your history from your state’s DMV or from an online agency.  WWW.DMV.org is such a site. The state DMV’s and online sites do require a fee. If you utilize an online agency to obtain a copy of your driver history, make sure that you will receive your copy in a timely manner.

Regardless of what state your license is issued, any person looking to drive a college rented, leased or owned vehicle must submit an authorization to conduct a driver history query.
