Current Programs

March Into May

Get moving this semester with our 8-week walking challenge for Employee Wellness participants. (Students are also welcome to register.) Pedometers will be provided to the first 100 participants to sign up to help keep track of steps and activity. Register online or during the “March into May” Wellness Wednesday seminar. The program will run March 1 through May 1. Prizes will be awarded to the top three participants with the highest number of steps and recognition will be given to the top three departments with the highest average step counts! So get your friends and co-workers together and start stepping!

Wellness Wednesdays

Employee Wellness participants are invited to attend monthly wellness seminars that include a lecture and discussion. Healthy lunches, provided by Aramark, are offered during these seminars, which are held in the Wellness and Recreation Complex, room 213, from 12-1 p.m.

Online registration is required by the Friday prior to each seminar. Participants may not register for future seminars until the upcoming seminar is completed.

Spring Seminar Topics:

Hands-Only CPRTM: Lesson and Practice
Wednesday, Feb. 1
We’ve all seen the television commercials about Hands-Only CPRTM. They tell us to “push hard and fast in the center of the chest” when someone is having a cardiac emergency. In this seminar, we will teach you more about Hands-Only CPRTM and help you practice chest compressions on mannequins. You can save a life!

March Into May: Launch of Walking Program

Did you know that you burn approximately the same number of calories running a mile and walking a mile?!? Join us for a reminder about the many benefits of walking and a detailed description of the “March Into May” walking program.

Functional Movement Screen
Wednesday, March 21
The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a ranking and grading system that helps individuals identify functional limitations and asymmetries. Using the information from the FMS, exercise professionals can prescribe exercises that will be most effective to restore proper movement and build strength. Exercise Science and Athletic Training faculty members and students will perform the screen on participants (one on one!).

Alcohol Awareness
Wednesday, April 25
A glass of wine a day will keep the doctor away? In recognition of Alcohol Awareness Month, Stacey Rose, health educator, will describe the effects of short-term and long-term alcohol consumption and its health implications.

Chair Massages

Take a short break from your work and de-stress with a monthly chair massage. Massage therapist Julie Donahue provides fifteen-minute chair massages between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Wellness Center Resource Room on the following dates:
  • Monday, Feb 6
  • Monday, March 5
  • Monday, March 26
  • Monday, April 16
  • Monday, May 7

Reserve an appointment with Campus Recreation (x3468) by the Friday before each of the above dates. Participants may only register for the upcoming date.

W.O.W.! Wellness on Wheels

Upon request, the Campus Recreation wellness team will come to your office and present one of the following fun, hands-on workshops.

Hula Hooping
Feel like a kid again and hula hoop in the office!

Yoga Break
A short, relaxing yoga class to ease your mind and body.

Stress Busters
Make stress balls and aromatherapy pouches while learning about stress relief techniques.

Wiggle While You Work
Learn some exercises/stretches you can do at your desk or in the office.

Germ Exterminators
Reduce your risk of catching the common cold and flu.

Please mail Stacey Rose at srose@spfldcol.edu at least 2 weeks in advance to request a W.O.W. workshop. Each workshop will last 15-45 minutes.

Employee Group Exercise Classes

In addition to the general Spring 2012 Campus Recreation Group Exercise Schedule, the following classes are offered exclusively to Springfield College Employee Wellness participants, January 23 through May 11. There will be no classes on February 20 and there will be a limited schedule during spring break. All classes are held the Wellness and Recreation Complex, room 214.

Registration is not required to participate in these classes.

Instructor’s Choice
Get ready for a surprise workout on Mondays from 12:05-12:50 p.m.! Your instructor chooses the format of each class to help you increase your aerobic endurance and/or muscular strength. Class formats may include step, hi/low impact aerobics, kickboxing, cycle, strength training, circuit training, dance, etc.

Fit Camp
In this boot camp-inspired class, the instructor will challenge you (with appropriate modifications) with a variety of high intensity intervals, including cardio bursts, body weight exercises, and strength training. All fitness levels welcome! Fit Camp will be held Wednesdays from 12:05-12:50 p.m.

Muscle Fit
Strengthen your muscles, in this full body resistance training class that utilizes stability balls, bands, tubing, barbells, dumbbells and more. This class is held from 12:05-12:50 p.m. on Fridays.

Yoga
Join us on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:05-1 p.m., for a yoga class that offers appropriate modifications for both beginners and experienced students. Classes teach comfortable alignment, improved respiration, stress relief, and relaxation. Flexibility is NOT a prerequisite for this class!

Healthy Cooking Classes

Join the ARAMARK chefs in these hands-on classes that cover a variety of information and healthy cooking techniques. The menus are seasonally inspired and allow each participant to bring home a meal for four.

Classes are offered in Cheney Hall’s back kitchen from 4:30-6 p.m. Classes are limited to staff and faculty participants. Call Mary Kate McMahon at x3421 to register by the Friday before each class. Space is limited to 8 participants. Note: participants may only attend one cooking class per semester.

Cancellation policy: If you have registered for a cooking class and cannot attend, you must give at least 24 hours notice. If you do not give 24 hours notice, you will be charged a fee of $60 (the cost of the class per person). You may also find a replacement and forward the name to Mary Kate McMahon at least 24 hours in advance of the class.
