MM October 2010 SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE HOLDS RIBBON CUTTING FOR RENOVATED JUDD GYMNASIA, ITS MOST HISTORIC CAMPUS BUILDING
Officially opening the newly renovated Judd Gymnasia, the oldest building at Springfield College, Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn, Board of Trustees Chair Sally Griggs, and student leaders cut a ceremonial ribbon at the building’s entrance on Oct. 13, before an audience of students, trustees, and members of the faculty and staff. MM October 2010 CENTURY-OLD TIME CAPSULE OPENED
During the official opening of the newly renovated Judd Gymnasia, the oldest building at Springfield College, on Oct. 13, Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn, student leaders, and college archivist Jeff Monseau opened a time capsule that had been unearthed during renovation. The century-old time capsule, which measures about seven by nine by six inches, had been sealed and placed in the corner of West Gym when it was built in 1910. Read more.

MM October 2010 PRESIDENT FLYNN ANNOUNCES PLANS TO RETIRE
Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn, who transformed the College in his 12 years as its president, announced recently that he plans to retire on Aug. 31, 2011. Read more


MM October 2010 U.N. WOMEN IN BUSINESS AWARD WINNER SPEAKS AT SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE
Ayuru Beatrice Byaruhanga, who grew up in a society where girls had few educational opportunities and won the 2010 United Nations EMPRETEC Women in Business Award for creating a school for both girls and boys, told her story on Oct. 19, when she addressed the Springfield College community in the Richard B. Flynn Campus Union, at Springfield College. Read more.

MM October 2010 SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE GYMNASTICS SHOW GOES TO EXTREMES
What do extreme sports, circus entertainment, dance shows, and popular fitness routines have in common? They’re all based in gymnastics, as the 101st annual Springfield College gymnastics exhibition show, “Gymnastics 101: Basics Taken to the Extreme,” made evident on Oct. 15 and 16 in Blake Arena. MM October 2010 COMMUNITY SERVICE PERFORMED FOR ANNUAL HUMANICS IN ACTION DAY
Springfield College’s students, faculty, and staff – 1,900 of them – performed services for schools, churches, senior citizens’ facilities, child care centers, community organizations, city agencies, and individual neighbors throughout the city on Oct. 5, 2010, for the College’s 13th annual Humanics in Action Day. MM October 2010 SIX INDUCTED INTO THE SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
A total of six prominent individuals were inducted into the Springfield College Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 16 during evening ceremonies at Dana Gymnasium in the PE Complex. The six inducted included Tom Dunkley '50, Gordon Kelly '60, David Girouard '93, G'98, Nora Kelly Westkott '99, Erin Pac '03, and current President Richard B. Flynn H'03. Read more.

MM October 2010 CARTER LEADS FOOTBALL PAST UTICA, 20-16, IN EMPIRE 8 CONTEST
Quarterback Josh Carter rushed 102 yards to lead his Springfield College football team to a 20-16 victory over Utica College in a hard-fought Empire 8 contest at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field in front of a Homecoming Weekend crowd. Read more.

MM October 2010 MALONE'S HEROICS PROPEL MEN'S SOCCER PAST FRAMINGHAM STATE, 4-3, IN DOUBLE OVERTIME
Freshman Ryan Malone sent the game into overtime with a goal in the final 4:14 of regulation and then tallied the game-winner 37 seconds into the second overtime to propel the Springfield College men's soccer team to a thrilling 4-3 win over Framingham State in non-conference action. Read more.

MM October 2010 WOMEN'S SOCCER HOLDS ON FOR 2-1 WIN OVER WHEATON
The Springfield College women's soccer team opened up a 2-0 lead in the first half and held on for a critical 2-1 victory over rival Wheaton College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Oct. 16. Read more.

MM October 2010 FIELD HOCKEY USES THREE FIRST-HALF GOALS TO DOWN WPI, 3-1
The Springfield College field hockey team opened up a 3-0 lead after the first 35 minutes of play and never looked back as it picked up a 3-1 win over visiting WPI in a key New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest. Read more.

MM October 2010 WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RUNS TO 12TH-PLACE FINISH AT UALBANY INVITATIONAL
The Springfield College women’s cross country team scored 369 points in the University of Albany Invitational to place 12 out of the 22 teams competing in the race. Senior Lacey Cartier led the way for Springfield, posting a 5K time of 19:07.6, good for 40th place overall. Read more.

MM October 2010 O'CONNELL LEADS MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY AT UALBANY INVITATIONAL
The Springfield College men’s cross country team finished with 367 points in the University of Albany Invitational, good for 15th out of the 25 participating teams. Read more.



MM October 2010 SPRINGFIELD DEFEATS SMITH IN WOMEN'S TENNIS, 6-3
Behind Amy Shaw, the Springfield College women's tennis team defeated Smith College, 6-3, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match that started at Julius Appleton Courts and, because of rain, was completed in the Field House. Read more.

MM October 2010 BALANCED ATTACK LEADS WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL PAST WELLESLEY, 3-1
The Springfield College women's volleyball team used a balanced attack to topple rival Wellesley College, 3-1, in a matchup of the final two unbeaten teams in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Springfield won the match by the scores of 25-12, 10-25, 25-21, and 25-16. Read more.

MM October 2010 MEN'S TENNIS EASES PAST WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE, 8-1
Led by a spectacular comeback by sophomore Ben Burnap at No. 1 singles, the Springfield College men's tennis team dominated their counterparts from Western New England College, winning as a team 8-1 at Julius Appleton Courts. Read more.

MM October 2010 GOLF PLACES THIRD AT NECC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Led by the tournament's individual runner-up, Craig DiFranco, the Springfield College men's golf team finished third at the NECC Championships. Kyle DiFranco took home Rookie of the Year honors after finishing tied for fourth. Read more.

  • Annual Graduate Student Open House, Springfield, Mass.
    Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, Noon
    Campus tours will begin at noon. The tours will be followed by a General Information Session at 1 p.m. and faculty/student conversations at 2 p.m. All events take place in, or leave from, the Cleveland E. and Phyllis B. Dodge Room of the Richard B. Flynn Campus Union. Representatives from the offices of Financial Aid, Residence Life, and Graduate Admissions, as well as faculty and current graduate students, will be on hand to speak with students about their plans for next year.

    Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    This program will allow prospective students to meet with faculty in their area of academic interest, attend a financial aid information session, participate in a multicultural gathering, and tour campus to experience the Springfield College community.
