COUNCIL OF INDEPENDENT COLLEGES APPOINTS SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE TO CONSORTIUM ASSESSING EFFECTIVE TEACHING, LEARNING Why do students learn more effectively at some colleges than at others? The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) has included Springfield College in a consortium of institutions of higher education that are committed to finding answers to that question using the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA). BRIAN ROSE COMPLETES SUPREME COURT INTERNSHIP, PLANS CAREER IN INTERNATIONAL LAW For Brian F. Rose, a graduate of the class of 2007 and former student member of the Springfield College Board of Trustees, his bachelor's degree in criminal justice and psychology was a launching pad to one of the nation's most competitive internships - judicial intern at the Supreme Court of the United States. Now, he has his sights set on a career in international law. Read more.

SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK HOSTS CONFERENCE As part of National Social Work Month, the School of Social Work hosted a conference featuring "A Conversation with Dr. Angelo McClain, Commissioner, Massachusetts Department of Social Services" on March 4. Read more.

ATHLETICS

AJ NALLY RACKS UP NATIONAL WEEKLY HONORS IN MEN'S VOLLEYBALL Sophomore AJ Nally was been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III Men's National Player of the Week as well as the EIVA Hay Player of the Week after helping the Pride to wins over two Division I opponents. For the week, Nally hit at a .492 clip, while averaging 5.43 kills, 1.29 aces, 3.14 digs and 6.79 points per game. Read more.

JAMAAL GIBBS NAMED TO NEWMAC MEN'S BASKETBALL SECOND TEAM Capping off an outstanding senior year, Jamaal Gibbs was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team for his efforts on the hardwood. Gibbs, who started in all 25 games, averaged 12.5 points per game and handed out 74 assists. Read more.

RACHELLE WALKER NAMED NEWMAC ROOKIE OF THE YEAR; TARA MCCARTHY TABBED NEWMAC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SECOND TEAM SELECTION After a standout freshman campaign, Rachelle Walker was honored as the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, while teammate Tara McCarthy finished off her record-setting career with being named to the all-conference second team. Walker averaged 8.4 points per game while connecting on over 40% from downtown, while McCarthy led the team with 12.8 points per game. Read more.

PRICE AND TAFFE EARN NEWMAC POST-SEASON ACCOLADES IN WOMEN'S SWIMMING Moira Price was named NEWMAC Swimmer of the Year, while head coach John Taffe, whose Springfield Pride won the NEWMAC championship for the eighth-straight year, was named Swimming Coach of the Year. Read more.

CASAVANT AND AVDOULOS PICK UP NEWMAC POST-SEASON AWARDS IN MEN'S DIVING Peter Avdoulos was named Diving Coach of the Year when the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced its 2007-08 Men's Swimming & Diving Post-season awards. Senior Ben Casavant (Acton, Mass.) earned NEWMAC Diver of the Year accolades. Springfield also earned the NEWMAC Sportsmanship award. Read more.

MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING TO SEND SIX STUDENT ATHLETES TO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS The NCAA announced that six student athletes from Springfield College had qualified for the upcoming 2008 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships March 20-22. Roy Burch qualified in three individual events and will be joined by Ben Casavant, Greg Pearsall, Matt Manoni, Anthony Bruno, and Andrew Blakesley. Read more.

ELLIOT SMITH FINISHES SEVENTH, BECOMES ALL-AMERICAN AT NCAA DIVISION III WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN IOWA Elliot Smith of Springfield College pinned his opponent in his final collegiate match and thereby finished seventh in the 184-pound weight class at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, March 8. The seventh-place finish allowed Smith to claim All-America status. Read more.

BEHIND RECORD-SETTING PERFORMANCES, MEN'S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD PLACES SIXTH AT ECACs Paced by a record-setting performance in the 4x220 relay, the Springfield College men's track and field team placed sixth out of 58 teams at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships held March 8-9. The Pride's 4x220 relay team comprised of Steve Headley, Nickel Hay, Matt Amendola, and Tim Rehm ran an ECAC and Springfield College record time of 1:30.17 en route to a first-place finish. WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD PLACES 27TH OUT OF 56 TEAMS AT ECACs The Springfield College women's indoor track and field team recorded a 27th place finish at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships March 8-9 and was paced by Nikki Hay. The Pride's top finisher, Hay set a new school record in the triple jump as she qualified for the NCAA's and earned All-ECAC honors with a distance of 11.61m (38-01.25). Read more.

MEN'S GYMNASTICS FINISHES SECOND AT TEMPLE Paced by several outstanding individual efforts, the Springfield College men's gymnastics team finished in second place at a tri-meet hosted by Temple University. Josh Fox finished second in the all-around with a score of 80.500 as he picked up a fourth place finish on the vault with a mark of 15.200 and finished fifth on the floor routine with a score of 14.400. The Pride also had Matt Bolognese register a first-place mark of 14.950 on the still rings. Read more.

WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS DEFEATS MIT, 185.150 TO 180.575, ON SENIOR DAY Alice Efland, Amberlynn Gifford, and Katlyn Cronin led the way as the #4-ranked Springfield College women's gymnastics team defeated MIT, 185.150 to 180.575, in Blake Arena on Feb. 24., Senior Day. Efland set a personal best on the floor exercise with a second place score of 9.600, Gifford had a personal best on the vault with a 9.100, while Cronin scored an 8.900 on the balance beam. MEN'S LACROSSE COMPLETES SENSATIONAL COMEBACK WITH 10-9 WIN AT NO. 19 STEVENS TECH Preseason All-American Jake Beebe's go-ahead goal with just 36 seconds remaining in regulation capped off a sensational comeback by the Springfield College men's lacrosse team at Stevens Tech on March 8. Trailing 9-1 with 11:07 remaining in the third quarter, the Pride's defense held the Ducks without a goal over the final 26:07 of the game and netted nine unanswered goals as it claimed a 10-9 victory. WOMEN'S LACROSSE SURGES PAST CROSS-TOWN RIVAL WNEC, 17-5, IN SEASON OPENER Junior Heather Dobson scored six goals with an assist, all in the second half, as the visiting Springfield College women's lacrosse team opened its season with a 17-5 victory over Western New England College March 11. Junior Erin Doolan added four goals while graduate student Rachel Lampros contributed three goals and an assist. Read more.
