NEWS
CHARLIE REDMOND NAMED DEAN, SCHOOL OF HEALTH, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, AND RECREATION The College has named Charlie Redmond as dean of the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, effective June 1, 2008. Redmond was selected for the position following the College's national search for a successor to William Considine, who retired as dean in December 2007. Read more.

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKERS TO BE STUART REESE, TENLEY ALBRIGHT Stuart H. Reese, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of MassMutual, and Dr. Tenley E. Albright, Boston surgeon and winner of the 1956 Olympic gold medal in figure skating, will give commencement addresses at the College's 2008 ceremonies. Reese will address undergraduates on May 18, at 9:30 a.m., at the MassMutual Center, in downtown Springfield, and Albright will speak to graduate students on May 17, at 9:30 a.m., on Naismith Green. JOHN RATEY, EXPERT ON HOW EXERCISE IMPROVES LEARNING, DELIVERS KARPOVICH LECTURE Dr. John J. Ratey, Harvard Medical School clinical associate professor of psychiatry and author of the new book, Spark, the Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, spoke on "The Impact of Exercise on Learning," on April 24 at this year's third Karpovich Lecture, hosted by the Springfield College School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.The Karpovich Lecture annually brings top experts in exercise physiology and sport science to the College for the benefit of students, professionals in these fields, and the community. HUMANICS PROFESSOR FOR 2008-2009 NAMED Al Petitpas, Ed.D., professor of psychology, was named Distinguished Springfield Professor of Humanics 2008-2009. Petitpas will succeed Mimi Murray, who concluded her year as the Distinguished Professor with the presentation of her Humanics Lecture, entitled "Happened Here: Helmets to Humanics, Springfield College Firsts," Apr. 17 in the Fuller Arts Center.

STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR SCHOLARLY WORKS More than 200 students participated in the fourth annual Scholars in Action Day, celebrated on campus April 15. The presentations, said event chairperson Betty Mann, associate vice president for graduate education and research, "are worthy of the recognition and respect of the entire Springfield College community." STEPPING UP DAY
The 82nd Annual Stepping Up Day was held on MacLean Terrace on April 17. Underclass students stepped up to their next academic year, and seniors were recognized by and admitted to the Alumni Association. Institutional scholarships and awards also were given. Read more.

MARJEANNE VACCO RECEIVES FULBRIGHT GRANT TO TEACH SOCIAL WORK IN PORTUGAL Marjeanne B. Vacco, of Londonderry, N.H., professor of human services at the Manchester, N.H. campus of the Springfield College School of Human Services, has been awarded a Fulbright senior specialist grant to serve in Oporto, Portugal, from April 7 to May 4, 2008. Pride Football will hold the SIXTH ANNUAL OLD SHOE GOLF CLASSIC at Westover Golf Course, Ludlow, Mass., on Sat., June 21, at noon. MEN'S VOLLEYBALL CAPTURES FIFTH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 3-0 WIN OVER VASSAR For the fifth time in program history, the Springfield College men's volleyball team can call themselves national champions. In front of a raucous crowd of 1,300, the Pride captured the 2008 Molten Division III Men's Invitational Championship by sweeping Vassar in three games on Apr. 12 on campus. In dominating fashion, the #2-seeded and #2-ranked Pride defeated the #4-seeded and #3-ranked Vassar by the scores of 30-26, 30-24, 30-20. Read more.

MEN'S GOLF RECORDS SIXTH PLACE FINISH AT STERLING INVITATIONAL The Springfield College men's golf team finished sixth out of 13 teams in the Sterling Invitational hosted by Worcester State College at the Par 71 Sterling National Country Club on Apr. 22. Read more.

SCHLINK AND TUNIS TABBED NEWMAC TENNIS DOUBLES TEAM OF THE WEEK The Springfield College number three doubles team of Bobby Schlink and Tim Tunis has been recognized as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Doubles Team of the Week. Read more.

POSNER NAMED NACGC EAST REGION COACH OF THE YEAR Steve Posner, head men's gymnastics coach at Springfield College for the past 26 years, has been named the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches East Region Coach of the Year for the 2008 season. Read more.

RHODES POWERS SOFTBALL TO KEY CONFERENCE SWEEP OVER MIT The Springfield College softball team held off MIT, 5-1, 6-5, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday, Apr. 19. Springfield will be the #3 seed in this week's NEWMAC post-season tourney. Junior lefthander Samantha Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) won her 9th and 10th straight decisions with her two victories. BASEBALL SPLITS AT MIT, WINNING 16-5, FALLING 7-2; EARNS #4 SEED IN NEWMAC TOURNEY Jimmy Lisowski pitched a gem in the opener as the Pride cruised to a 16-5 victory before MIT topped the visitors, 7-2, in the second game on Apr. 19. With the split, the Pride earned the fourth seed in the upcoming NEWMAC tournament. Tim Romeo was huge for the Pride in game one, finishing 4-for-5 with three runs and an RBI, while Ryan Hingston went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in. Read more.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE DROPS 10-9 HEARTBREAKER TO NO. 10 BABSON The Pride nearly pulled off the upset of the tenth-ranked team in the country on Apr. 19, but a last second goal was the difference as the Pride fell 10-9. Springfield received four goals each from junior Erin Doolan and sophomore Alexandra Bazzano, with Doolan also dishing out an assist for a game-high five points. Read more.

MEN'S LACROSSE TAKES HOLD OF PILGRIM LEAGUE WITH 11-5 WIN OVER BABSON The Springfield College men's lacrosse team took over sole possession of first place in the Pilgrim League with an 11-5 victory over host Babson College at MacDowell Field on Apr. 19. Junior captain Tyler Montgomery led all players with three goals for Springfield, while classmate Jake Beebe (added two goals and five assists for a game-high seven points. Read more.

MIKE MILLER WINS HOLY CROSS DECATHLON Mike Miller defeated 25 other competitors and finished first at the Holy Cross Decathlon Championship in Worcester, Mass. The senior scored a personal best 6,481 points to win by 230 points over his nearest competitor. With this score, Miller qualified provisionally for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Read more.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD Sophomore Nikki Hay won four events to help spark Springfield's first place finish at a tri-meet hosted by WPI Apr. 11 at Norcross Track. The Pride finished with 217 points while Coast Guard notched 97 and WPI ended the meet with 54. Hay started off the meet placing first in both the long (16-10) and the triple jump (35-7) and then capped off her day winning both the 100 meter (12.80) and the 200 meter dashes (26.49). Read more.

ROGER WILLIAMS OUTLASTS WOMEN'S TENNIS, 5-4 Melissa Weinstein and Amy Shaw were victors at No. 1 and No. 2 singles for Springfield College, but after all was said and done, the Roger Williams women's tennis team defeated Springfield, 5-4, at SC's Appleton Courts. With the match all tied at 4-all, it came down to a third set at No. 6 singles, in which the Hawks won 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-3. Read more.
